About The Ouroboros King

The Ouroboros King combines the strategic depth of chess with the build variety and replayability of roguelikes. Assemble a formidable army, discover powerful relics, and buy surprising gadgets to defeat the Coven.
  • Build the Ultimate Army: Combine classic and new fairy chess pieces, relics that give them bonuses, and consumable items that grant you temporary advantages to create a formidable army.
  • Perfect Your Strategy: You can only move one piece per turn, so you must choose carefully. Make your troops work together to obliterate the enemy army.
  • Another Chance: If you're defeated you can go back to action on another timeline, where the path to victory will change: different map, different enemies, different rewards... in true roguelike spirit.
  • Lots of end-game options to dial up the difficulty to insane levels.
  • Same-device multiplayer, challenge your friends to chess games with lots of unique pieces.
  • Chess-based tactics, easy to learn and hard to master.
  • 15-45 minute runs, good for a short break and also longer sessions.
  • No gatekeeping, all the content is unlocked from the start. Win or die based on your skills.
  • No need to learn any chess openings or study anything.
  • All in game text is available in English

it's uhh... not great. i mean the premise if great, variety is good, gameplay... well, it's chess on drugs, any questions? but what i mean is that some design or boss choices were just pure absurdity to me - first and i repeat FIRST BOSS gave me more trouble than second or third OR ALL OF THEM COMBINED! i couldn't even move without first boss just smacking me on top of my head every time i move, because i move = she can penetrate through terrain and my pieces... THE FUBERGHASTY F*CK YOU MEAN?! AND WHEN THEY ALL GANKED UP ON ME, THEY DIDN'T GIVE ANY FIGHT IF ONLY BECAUSE ROYAL GUARD KILLED HER FIRST TURN... and also some pieces just don't make sense to me, like musketeer and bow, or jester... i just cannot understand jester. and decoy, feels like they know i use decoy and just run away from it before they kill themselves on it. plain not fun. i did not feel much joy, exept for the briefest of triumphs where i could utilise blade dancer (feels good). but yeah, half of the pieces did not feel important or noteworthy to me with mix of "wait why the fu they were added, it's broken". felt more beffudlement at the game rather than want to continue. it was nice, but a bit too much with …

Decent. A lot of games have attempted the whole "chess with novel move sets" thing before, but this game pulls it off a little better than what I've typically seen, seemingly manage to grapple with the inherent ridiculous balancing of giving chess pieces new move capabilities a little better than most others have that I've encountered in the past. Overall delivery package could definitely use polish: there is a lack of linting on potential moves and you feel a little bit starved for information. One potential easy fix that would help a lot I think would be using two different colours for pieces different move axes, and possibly making use of arrows to show the pathway when hovering over an axis. I also think the game needs better notice for when you will be ending a move in check, really it should just straight up have a warning dialog IMHO like "this move will end your turn in check - are you sure?" because of the nature of instant death and the many novel types of pieces. Best of all I think would be a highlight over all pieces on the board that are currently "in danger"or something like that. With a bit of fine tuning and work on extra visibility as regards the state of the boar…

this game is creative but unbalanced i am not advanced at chess, but 1st boss have a chess piece that is just upgraded queen that is super mobile and your king cannot escape its reach without any chess piece blocking in front of your king (which mean one of your attacker piece got sealed, when piece number is same on both side, this is very unfair to you ) (unless you upgraded your king which would waste your chance to upgrading attacking piece, which would be a super bad decision), this is just so broken on the AI side, i am not getting 50% win rate on 1st boss over about 10 attempts

This game really brings a lot of strategies and complexity to the game! I'm actually really impressed by the determination the developers of this game had to offer to get this to us today. This game is the holy grail of chess games when I have to share my opinions on best Steam games.
