Verho - Curse of Faces

I think this game is good for what it's trying to be. If you like kings quest like games then you'll like this. The level design is good, the atmosphere and ost are good and it feels fair. Gameplay is basically the same for everything in the genre; kiting My only complaint/headsup for people interested is that the beginning is kinda bad/boring. It starts to ramp up once you get through the first boss. To explain a bit more, the game kinda starts you off in the middle of a poison swamp, you have to fight slug enemies and your only weapon is a broken sword unless you know what youre doing. I actually almost refunded about an hour in because I thought it was so lame. Looked up a walkthrough and saw some cool mid/late game areas/enemies and decided to stay. Edit: wow, the end game is so bad that i almost want to swap my review to negative. Feels extremely unfinished and the should've just ended at the puppet king.

Simple, graphically and mechanically (not necessarily a bad thing). The enemy designs and level layout are fantastic. The endgame can require a bit of grinding, especially the final realm, which is not required to beat the game. All in all had lots of good experiences with this game.

Verho is a really neat game and extremely impressive given that it's pretty much just a single developer's project. From the outset the game clearly wears its inspirations on its sleeve - if I were to try and describe it I'd probably summarize it as "it's Dark Souls 2 but with Kingsfield gameplay". It has a lot of the worldbuilding, level-design and progression elements that Dark Souls 2 had but with Kingsfield-style combat, character building and enemy design. Now I'm someone that loved both of those games so this is great but there's areas where the two just don't marry into eachother as effectively as I was hoping they would and the game also unfortunately carries some of the more pressing problems those games had. For starters - the scope of the enemy/boss encounters starts to massively outpace what the game's engine is actually capable of. Later bosses tend to have extremely grandiose, complex movesets which look visually spectacular but aren't too fun to play around when you're operating without meaningful dodge, block, parry or combo mechanics. I've discovered Verho shortly after completing Lunacid. If you're here for the same reason and you're wondering if the game is worth your time, then my short answer is: yes – give it a try. What i've found to be the most enjoyable about Verho was uncovering the mystery of the curse bit by bit. It was intriguing, well crafted, and you are given a choice at certain points of the story. Another good thing is, that the weapon and spell variety is quite impressive – especially the spells. Though i will say, that playing as a pure spellcaster is most likely not a viable option and i suggest investing some points into STR or DEX early on. It's not much of an issue, since eventually you may end up having so many skill points that you won't be sure what to do with them, but i thought it is worth mentioning. You can also re-spec any time you want at an altar with an item called "blank mask". The biggest flaw is definitely the enemy design. It has been said in multiple reviews already, but it really is ridiculous how many of the enemies are able to phase through the walls and attack you like it's nothing.
