I absolutely loved Voxelgram 1 so when the demo for this hit, I got it... and the new game mechanics didn't make sense. I bought the full version when it released but refunded it fairly quickly. The new two color puzzles just didn't make much sense. I recently rebought it and I decided to give it a second try, and the new puzzle system finally clicked, but I still have some troubles with it. The tutorial on how the new mechanics work feel... pretty incomplete. While it does explain the new hint mechanics, it doesn't go too deep into them. I had to bruteforce my way into understanding how the hints work. In the previous game, once you got the amount of spaces filled in a line, the rest of the blocks could be deleted. but here, it means that those may be filled in by the other color and the tutorial does not show enough examples of this happening; It needs more than the simple, one line wide examples included with the game. Having the new systems explained in a larger, 4x4 cube, would make it easier to understand how things are supposed to work. Is this a bad game? Voxelgram 2 is a reasonable successor to the original Voxelgram, with two main offerings: 250 new puzzles, and a new two-colour mode that changes up how puzzles play entirely. I think the idea behind a two-colour mode is interesting, but in practice I didn't find it super enjoyable to play, and quickly swapped back to the single-colour mode. Normally, you use one mouse button for colouring and the other for removing, so adding a third option in makes it quite awkward - the game's solution (a toggle to change which colour you're using) isn't ideal, but I'm not sure what would be. I found the puzzles ok, if a bit easy, but I can't say if that's because the game is easier than the first, or if I'm just used to the concept after playing through the original game. Overall, Voxelgram 2 is a weak recommend, for anyone who strongly enjoyed the original game and would like some more puzzles to engage in.

The addition of the 2-colour clues takes a while to get your head around if you're well acquainted with the first Voxelgram. Once you have given it a bit of time though, It clicks well enough. Just make sure you sort out your best interface and rearrange your mouse button imputs as necessary. Then you can sink into that satisfying zen state as you delete blocks on semi-autopilot. If anything, the more complex ruleset has made the actual deduction a little easier, puzzle by puzzle. If you are of the same opinion, try turning off some of the visual aids to ramp up the difficulty again. Glad I bought it on sale, I think I prefer the first game but I appreciate the effort from the developer to try and shake things up a bit while keeping a similar vibe. We'll see how much time I put into the game. It'll be a better indication of my love for Voxelgram 2 than this review.

Worth every penny at full price for any 3D Nonogram puzzle fan like myself, especially for people who don't own part 1 yet! A good, challenging upgrade of the original concept. Both the original as well as upgraded mode are playable in this version, so it's less a sequel and more base game+. Since puzzle games are good for the brain, I recommend playing the new mode a long time after the original to challenge your neurons anew.
