About We Need Space

WE NEED SPACE is a romantic comedy visual novel about blasting the people we love into space.

Obsessive planner Gwen, fresh from an explosive breakup with chaotic, scattered Amelia, vengefully signs Amelia up for a service that will temporarily launch Amelia into space on a rocket. But when Amelia signs Gwen up for the same thing and they wind up in space together, a malfunction causes the rocket to fail and they have to work together to make it back alive. Can you save them?

This is a good yuri visual novel. While it has a ridiculous premise and wacky, sometimes cringey comedy, the story is surprisingly relatable. The conflict between the couple at the heart of the story is the kind we've all encountered, and the overall moral of the story -- that we all make mistakes, but we just have to be big enough to work through them -- is an important lesson. The game also has surprisingly good music for an indy title.

I'm not a huge fan of thumbing down indie games, especially some that do feel like the genuine creative output of a real person who cared about what they made, and I think that's true here. We Need Space is about an hour long comedy game about a break up gone to utter extremes and I don’t think it's aggressively bad or anything, I just found it a little chaotic and slapstick and just far more all over the place for my taste. There’s some solid jokes here and there, the leads are both perfect blends of the worst person you know and someone you can really imagine being friends with. And there were moments of genuine feeling, but it just never came together. I found myself glad it was so short instead of disappointed by that. That all said, especially for single dev team games, if the dev’s reading this please don’t be disheartened, making games is a hard as hell process, even if the end result is I think this ones kinda messy. Keep at it, you’ll only get better at it and making a complete game is more than most will ever manage.

Short, cute, game with a cohesive story. Only one real choice; not that I was looking for a branching narrative. Music isn't memorable, but is pleasant and fits. Good character art, as featured. Feels authentic.

A nice, short and funny yuri story with some drama and coffee ice cream!

A number of the background images appear to have been AI generated, notably the television (near the start) and the rocket ship interior. This makes it difficult for me to recommend the game, especially because the art that seems to be hand-drawn is so much nicer to look at. I don't expect much from a game this cheap, but I'd have willingly paid double or triple for a version where the backgrounds are all human-drawn. That all being said the story is sweet and funny and I have no complaints on that front. Another reviewer described it as "dumb space yuri" which perfectly sums it up.

I like but don't love the writing, but it's plenty good enough to handle the transition from wacky hijinks earlier on to some more serious character moments toward the end while still remaining pretty lighthearted. I had enough fun with it that I'm definitely more curious about their second game now.
