Who's Lila?

Absolute masterpiece. Russian indie devs did it again

structurally essentially a hypertext narrative (that is, beyond the sense in which essentially every visual novel or rpg with "routes" is hypertext). invokes common ideas and symbols of old-fashioned occult psychology and more modern online cryptic spaces and interests (e.g ARGs, datamining, old released and redacted documents) to work at an idea which i think ends up mostly well-done. it might be a matter of personal taste but i think its lack of complexity both makes it worse and better in distinct senses. i think it suffers from not being particularly involved - it's not really much of a rabbit-hole, and so leaves the game with a fairly surface-level presentation of its more cryptic elements and therefore really does not cohere with what makes them feel inherently cryptic (grand narratives are left without much to support their grandiosity, revelations are not always particularly as impactful as they should be) - but along different lines, i also think that (ending spoilers) [spoiler] the complete lack of ultimate complexity is a great way of expressing the fragile nature of the mystery [/spoiler]. probably i wish there was more of a rabbit-hole before the end the visual prese…

When I'm dying of old age and bad life choices in 2090 I'll still be telling people about Lila. My grandkids are ♥♥♥♥♥♥

A very surprising game which quickly turns into a genuine quest for answers spread across several replays, metagaming and ARG. Would recommend going in blind at first and hunt the endings later with some help. I was a bit annoyed when it turned into an ending simulator, but some genuinely keep the intrigue rolling and lure you deeper into the rabbit hole of who actually is Lila?
