Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World

The original is my favorite in the serie but somehow I don't like this remaster. It's hard to navigate and I dislike the art style. The original is more enjoyable.

[b]A very simple platformer.[/b] Nothing in this game is really anything more than simple. Levels for the most part are pretty basic with the exception of the Ice Pyramid. The combat is also simple and consists of basic grounded and ariel attacks. I felt like I could figure the bosses out very quickly. Story was also very simple. The only part I really wasn't pleased with was the visual presentation. While the character models looked good, they were still animated roughly. Some enviorments also look very cheap and plasticy compared to the original version. The thing that saved the game from being mediocre for me was bouncing off of enemies with the downwards air attack. The kill-chains you can get from it really gives the levels a unique flow.

Having played the original [i]Wonder Boy VI[/i] (not 4, 6) via a translated rom, this is pretty much a remaster of that. Which is a good thing because the original is extremely fun and presents some memorable characters. Asha/Aisha, the Queen, and Blue Pepe (who plays a not-insignificant role in [i]Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom[/i]). The environments are still nicely detailed and the music is oddly relaxing at times. Fans of WB4/5 will also recognize the spirits as the followers that you got in those games. That said, this is kind of the odd game out in the series (not counting the first). From 2 onward, there was a real emphasis on exploration and finding hidden doors and treasures in the world that required some lateral thinking. WB6 deviates from that to be more of a straight-up action platformer with some minor RPG and puzzle elements. There are still hidden life seeds and gold around but a sharp eye will catch those out in the open. The use of armor/bracelets to add a second health bar, along with life seeds for the main one, is also unique to this title; previous ones had you find life hearts. Asha in Monster World is a charming old-school platforming adventure with great visuals, catchy music, and outstanding presentation. The combat and platforming are simple, but that was fine with me. The real appeal is the easygoing adventure feel. Moving through its colourful themed areas like the volcano, steamworks, ice pyramid, sky temple, and underground cave was consistently charming and relaxing. It never reaches the highs of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, but I still enjoyed my time with it. It is short, colourful, straightforward, and easy to finish in a sitting or two. My one major complaint is the ice pyramid. That section feels like old game design at its worst with backtracking, annoying statue-order puzzle stuff, and sphinx questions that were more frustrating than clever. I can apprecaite it as a releic of another era, but it was easily a low point. Still, outside of that section, this is a cozy little retro adventure that I am glad I played.

This game is broken! It glitched on me twice so I can't proceed in the game. And the second time was after the 2 hour-limit so i can't refund it either. I have to start all over again and I don't want that! Don't buy it! It's broken and i haven't played it for several years now! too bad!
