Derail Valley is praised by players as an exceptionally immersive and fulfilling train simulator that successfully blends RPG-like progression with realistic maintenance mechanics and locomotive customization, creating a strong sense of purpose in gameplay. However, some players express frustration with the game's slow development pace during its extended early access period and report persistent bugs such as disappearing tools and unresponsive controls that detract from the experience.

Derail Valley is the best train simulator I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Unlike most other train sims I've played, DV doesn't sit you at your desk and have you manage speed for hours on end so you can arrive at your destination in 4 hours. Instead, you're on reasonably hazardous track, and there's no HUD telling you what the speed limits been for the past hour. You have to watch out for track signage or get jumpscared by taking a 30km/h turn at 80km/h. The punishment for failure isn't a black screen and load checkpoint, either. The railroad demands payment for damages and you are at fault, with the government coming in force too if there's environmental damage. A derailment can set you back a couple of hours worth of jobs, and particularly bad derailments can cost you several hundred thousand dollars. Fortunately, as an independent contractor, your rates are exorbitant and your service is quick. A goob job from Harbour to City West can net you 50k with about an hour of work, and that's without the time bonus. Train operation is complex enough to be satisfying and combined with the constant speed limit and gradient changes, there's hardly a moment where you're not doing som…

I've played for a while now and to put it shortly - it's great. Probably best intro to train-sims and fun, rewarding expirience. Definitely worth the full price. The only con is slow development. However, it's a steady development with lots of content each patch.

Derail Valley is one of the best games I’ve played. It gives me exactly what I want from a simulator: a job to do, a machine to learn, and the freedom to figure things out myself. I’m coupling wagons, shunting, driving trains, planning what to do next, and dealing with the consequences when I get it wrong. Progress feels earned because I’ve learned how to do the work better. The trains are incredibly detailed. The controls, sounds and way each locomotive handles make them feel like machines you actually have to understand. Learning one is satisfying in its own right, and VR makes every cab feel that much more convincing. There’s always the temptation to take just one more job. Derail Valley combines that hands-on detail with freedom, progression and real consequences. If you love trains or the satisfaction of learning how a machine works, this game is brilliant.
