✦ AI summary

Millennia is a turn-based strategy game with interesting age progression mechanics and creative fictional eras that players appreciate, but it suffers from significant performance issues, occasional game-breaking bugs like capital independence, and a perception of developer abandonment that prevents it from reaching its potential as a worthy alternative to established franchises like Civilization.

This was initially going to be a negative review as I'd played this game for a few hours back when it was released and I wasn't impressed by it at all. I started playing Millennia again last week when I gave the Paradox games a quick look through after I did an all achievements run of Surviving Mars, so thought I'd do an all achievements run of this game, which after "59.1 hrs last two weeks" I've achieved. Having played through all the ages and mastered the micromanagement intensive worker placement goods system, I have to say that the game is actually quite good. It did take awhile for me to learn to love the game. I initially had 6.3 hours on record before two weeks ago and I would've gave this game a negative review saying it's terrible and felt pretty good leaving at that. The game definitely takes a slow burn approach to enjoying it's content, as the principle component of it's enjoyment factor is derived from it's non-standard ages. In particular it's variant ages, or punk-verse ages as I like to call them. I normally don't recommend mods in reviews, but the "Ultimate Timelines" mod on the Workshop almost feels mandatory, as it lets the player string variant and even …

Was having fun until my capital declared independence, removing itself from my nation

It has a lot of interesting mechanics including some fictional eras that make it actually interesting to explore with new runs. The downside is bad optimization and overall feels like it could have some polishing. For example every time a battle starts I'm getting a 3s freeze because it's creating a 3D scene for absolutely everything for no reason.

Just play Civ 5 or any older entry and you will have more fun.

I really wish I could recommend this game. I REALLY love the ages system, especially the more wacky or hidden ages. I love the national spirit system. I like the resource & trading system. The gameplay is fun. But they just abandoned it. It could have been something truly great, but now its just kinda left out to rot.
