About 9 Years of Shadows

✦ AI summary

Join warrior Europa and her magical companion Apino as you explore the corrupted mechanical giant Talos, battling twisted creatures and switching between elemental armors to unlock new abilities and exploit enemy weaknesses. This visually striking Metroidvania features a world starved of color that you'll restore through exploration, combat, and a transcendent soundtrack by legendary video game composers that's woven into both gameplay and story.

9 Years of Shadows is a side-scrolling Metroidvania by Halberd Studios. Travel alongside Europa, a brave warrior determined to enter the mechanical giant Talos and stop the corruption within before it swallows the world in darkness. Battle through tainted creatures, meet charismatic musicians and uncover the truth behind the curse that robbed the land of all color. Many have tried to venture inside the twisted depths of Talos, a dormant fortress where several civilizations have settle over centuries. And, after losing everything she held dear, Europa has nothing holding her back from attempting what others could not achieve. As a noble fighter who refuses to be bound by the curse, she must enter the castle, find the source of corruption, and return the color once and for all.

This adventure is not for Europa to face alone. Inside the giant, she befriends Apino, a cute floating bear who seems to possess magical abilities that can restore color and replenish the health of his allies. He is also able to shield his companions from the multiple dangers that roam Talos’ hallways.

While exploring the castle, Apino can cleanse the corruption around Talos and shoot a variety of projectiles that can destroy dark crystals and inflict damage:
  • A fist that punches upwards when conjured.
  • A blast that travels along a surface until collision
  • A cyclone that returns to Apino like a boomerang.
Use the elements to your advantage to travel the map dynamically. Acquire the elemental armors that were once treasures to ancient civilizations and change on the fly and unlock special abilities to traverse your way: from swimming against waterfalls to traveling underground tunnels or gliding through warm air currents.
Harness the power of lightning, water, earth, and fire. Surprise bosses while you switch armors, perform strong halberd combos, and exploit your foes’ weaknesses to pave your way through the heart of the shadows. Music is all but the soul of the game. Revitalize the world while you listen to a moving soundtrack composed by Miguel Hasson, as well as soothing pieces scored in 432hz by celebrated composers Michiru Yamane (Castlevania series) and Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear Solid series). Meet these guest composers as in-game NPCs who aid in Europa’s quest throughout the game.

Music is the binding thread that combines gameplay and storytelling: collect musical notes and perform a healing lullaby to restore your health.-------------------------------------"Literally stunning" Keen Gamer"A stunning Metroidvania"

✦ AI summary

9 Years of Shadows is a metroidvania with strong art and music that draws players in, but suffers from inconsistent execution across gameplay, story, and technical issues. Players praise the visual presentation and appreciate the elemental armor system and exploration length, but complain about confusing or disengaging narrative, unbalanced boss encounters with limited healing windows, poorly explained mechanics like shield charging, and controller input problems at the start that can discourage players before they fully understand the game.

As many people have mentioned, the art and music are pretty good, but the story is hard to follow and didn’t really keep me engaged. One thing that really should have been fixed is the intro. You’re supposed to hold RT, but for some reason it doesn’t work properly with a gamepad, which can make it seem like the game is broken right from the start. I also didn’t realize until much later that you can charge your shield by holding RT. Once I figured that out, the game became much easier. I noticed quite a few people in the discussion forums didn’t know about this either and ended up quitting the game. Knowing that, I actually had a pretty good time with it. It’s not an amazing game, but it’s perfectly fine, especially on sale. Also, it’s a very easy 100% achievement game if you’re into that.

Short and sweet with minimum backtracking. Some bosses take way too long tho

If I hold RT for longer, perhaps the gameplay will improve from watching paint dry to kick a can down the road! So much fun!

Out of the get-go, this game is a solid 8/10 with what it has to offer. First, a few things to take into account: - I played this in the last/current available patch. - I LOVE Metroidvanias to death. - I played with a controller. The good: - This game has amazing art. From the start the world draws you in. Just the art alone is worth the asking price. At many points the game just throws at you visual masterpieces. - The combat is simple, but good enough that it requires some level of skill, although I found it a bit on the easier side of things. And although enemies repeat a lot, it never got boring since you're always trying to remember what variant of that enemy it is to avoid specific attacks each variant does. - The music is anywhere from serviceable to good. However, the credits song is just out right amazing. It itself felt like its own reward. - Progression always feels meaningful. - The rooms are designed in such a way that rooms are puzzles or tests of skill the first time you go through, similar to other games like Metroid Prime. And traversal always feels fun and relatively snappy. - The story is simple, but effective. And I feel like a lot of people will find it quite…

This was a pretty cool metroidvania adventure. I like how they combined traversal of the environment with the various armor/shield elemental types. I felt like the game was just long enough not to overstay its welcome but also to give that sense of exploration. The story didn’t make much sense to me for most of the game but I think I understood it in the end lol
