Chris Sawyer's Locomotion™

Chris Sawyer's Locomotion is the guy behind RollerCoaster Tycoon doing transport logistics instead of coasters, and it's got that same obsessive, chunky, slightly janky charm. Build rail, road, water, and air networks from the 1800s onward, wrestling with gradients, junctions, and timetables that never quite behave the way you planned. It's not flashy, the UI shows its age and the tutorial barely exists, but there's real depth in the track-laying and terraforming, and the isometric sprite art has more character than most modern management games manage. For me though, this one isn't really about the mechanics. I used to boot this up right after school, bag still on my back, racing to get a rail line built before my dad got home from work. Then he'd pull up a chair and we'd sit there together, him handling the finances, me building unnecessarily elaborate bridges because I thought they looked cool. Some of my calmest childhood memories are just the two of us watching a coal train crawl across a line we built together. Jank and all, this game is tangled up with a genuinely good stretch of my childhood, and no patch will ever touch that. Recommended.
