About Railroad Tycoon II Platinum

✦ AI summary

Build and manage railroad empires across real-world routes from 1804 to 2000, complete with authentic period aesthetics, real historical figures as AI opponents, and genuine satellite-based maps. This is a deeply immersive train simulation for enthusiasts who want rails, not roads or runways, with Railroad Tycoon II and The Second Century expansion included.

Includes Railroad Tycoon II and the expansion The Second Century
It can take you from New York to South Africa. It can take you from the year 1804 to the year 2000. It can take you from penniless manual laborer to powerful multi-millionaire.
It can take you from a normal, well-adjusted, well-rounded person to an obsessed, singled-minded, one-tracked train head. This is a real railroad game, not just a strategy game that happens to involve railroads. If you want to hop on a plane, car or ship, hop on another game.
This game is about trains for people who love trains. Everything about the game is centered around an authentic look and feeling of the railways. Period video and pictures are interlaced with the game. The design and interface are true to the character of the fabled late 1800's railroads. A.I. opponents are based on real people. And all maps are real (based on satellite photography from US Geological Service and other sources).

Still my favorite railroad game, the only one that comes close is Railroad Tycoon III, which has a more in-depth economy, but suffers from early 3D graphics. If you want to build rail empires and not fiddle with signals, the modern games don't come close. Two of the other aspects of genius are the changing economy - so what is profitable in a great economy may be unprofitable in a bad one, especially if older trains are requiring more maintenance than they used to - and the three-tier win system, often making it possible to achieve a modest victory in a straightforward fashion, but requiring much greater skill to win the gold medal. This all interacts with two of the game's other features - the stock market (and player wealth), and scriptable events, very well. Well-designed scenarios, of which there many, thus require not just understanding the economy and which trains to choose across which terrains (and with varying cargo consists), but making strategic tradeoffs and risks that sometimes require pursuing less profitable or unprofitable expansion in the name of scenario goals, and sometimes backfire, often in spectacular fashion if the stock market is involved. A great game to play at your own pace. Biggest dislike... Save game function does not keep rail building on electric tracks. The number of hours I have played before I realized my trains were not working has been very frustrating!
