About Rad Rodgers - Radical Edition

The Story

Rad is a rambunctious but spirited young boy who maybe plays too many video games. After dozing off at the tail end of a long night of gaming, Rad awakens to find his dusty old console has turned itself back on. Suddenly a vortex emerges and he's sucked into his TV, where he finds himself the star in his very own video game adventure.

Dusty is Rad's good-hearted but foul-mouthed, now-sentient game console. His clock speed isn't what it used to be, but what he lacks for in megahertz he makes up for with experience and attitude!

Rad & Dusty's adventure takes them through many dangerous stages of action-packed, humor-filled, hardcore platforming fun. This decaying jungle world has been infected by a fierce corruption, and it's up to the unlikely buddy-duo Rad and Dusty to save the jungle's inhabitants and restore the Elder Tree as guardian of the land.

Features

Weapons: Dusty arms Rad with a variety of radical bad-ass weaponry. The Bolt Blaster has unlimited ammo, is easy to use, and more than enough firepower to get the job done. The Phoenix Cannon shoots out a fiery bird whose wingspan lights enemies ablaze as it flies by.

Sounds & Music: Composer Andrew Hulshult combined his years of musical experience (both performing and writing) with his passion for retro-style gaming to create an amazing and authentic soundtrack for the game complete with MIDI-inspired music... And synthesizers!

The Pixelverse: While Rad and Dusty are a great team, only Dusty can enter the electrified Pixelverse -- a dangerous spacetime-breaking region that exists behind the game world. Dusty enters the Pixelverse when necessary to repair glitches in the running game world, allowing both Rad & Dusty to continue their journey.

Classic Easter Eggs: The game features hard-to-find collectibles in sometimes even harder-to-find classic secret rooms. Use your precision platforming skills to collect 'em all.

RADICAL EDITION

This new and improved version of Rad Rodgers also include these brand new additions:

  • 2 Player Couch Co-op - Play together with a friend! Enemies can prepare themselves for tough battles!
  • Battle Mode – Tired of team play? Fight against your friends and show them who’s boss!
  • New Playable Characters
  • New Abilities!
  • New Minigames!
  • New Overworld!
  • New Levels!
  • And tons of new secrets, collectibles and unlockables!

✦ AI summary

Rad Rodgers has charming presentation with good level design and a humorous personality, but players are divided on execution. The controls receive mixed feedback ranging from terrible to decent, and the game is hampered by bugs, uneven pacing, and humor that doesn't always land, though some find it reminiscent of classic platformers like Conker's Bad Fur Day and worth playing on sale.

I remember really wanting to like this but forgot why I stopped playing- but now I remembered- the bugs. Way too many bugs. Completely ruins the game for me. It sucks because there IS. a good game in there but publisher doesn't seem to care. If the devs ever got a chance to polish this game I'm sure it would be fantastic.

Developed by Slipgate Ironworks and published by HandyGames in collaboration with 3D Realms, Rad Rodgers: Radical Edition is a fast-paced action platformer that celebrates the golden age of 1990s gaming while refining its mechanics for a modern audience. Rather than simply imitating the classics that inspired it, the game blends old-school level design with polished visuals, smoother controls, and new gameplay features that make this edition the definitive version of Rad's adventure. From its colorful environments to its emphasis on exploration and hidden collectibles, the game immediately appeals to players who appreciate traditional side-scrolling platformers with a contemporary presentation. The adventure follows Rad, an energetic young gamer who unexpectedly finds himself transported into the world of his favorite video game. Accompanying him is Dusty, a sarcastic and highly capable sentient game console whose personality provides much of the game's humor. Together they set out to restore order to a world infected by corruption, battling bizarre enemies and overcoming dangerous obstacles along the way. The chemistry between the two protagonists is one of the game's strongest q…

Rad Rodgers: Radical Edition is an okay action-platformer that seems determined to recreate the spirit of 90s gaming, including, unfortunately, some of the bugs. I almost quit because Rad kept getting stuck on invisible objects, leaving me with exactly one solution: restart the entire level. Nothing says “radical” quite like losing twenty minutes of progress because your character apparently collided with a ghost. The game even asks whether you're a kid when you start, presumably so it can adjust the dialogue. I chose “no,” so apparently Rad was allowed to discover a slightly more aggressive vocabulary. There are also various mini-games and weird side sections (pinball, memory games and other attempts to recreate that chaotic 90s gaming feel). Maybe that's the nostalgia talking, but for me they felt more like distractions than fun additions. Sometimes nostalgia is best left in the past. The biggest warning sign is that apparently fewer than 3% of players have actually finished the game, even on the easiest difficulty. And after repeatedly getting stuck on invisible geometry, I can understand why. It's not a terrible game, but the bugs turn what should be harmless platforming into a…

Heard about this game after visiting a con that we had in town. We got to meet the famous John St. John (AKA Voice of Duke Nukem). Really cool guy. He showed us various works he did, which included this game. As a platformer, it's overall solid although the last couple of stages get a little crazy. The game is decently generous on lives so no game over happened (played on Normal). This game was a let down though all the cutscenes John showed us, was ALL the cutscenes! This game starts off with a major good cutscene ---and then 10 stages (each one with a mini game afterwards- so 20 stages)...that's it. Nothing more to the story other than 'go help the tree so you can return to your world.' With all the neat animations etc. I was expecting more than just two cutscenes. The game just presents itself in that way and so it felt like a real let down! Game play as a platformer, it performs overall well, controls respond well, the enemies are colorful and the stages present just the right amount of challenge. It's a part collect o thon game, but you don't need any of that to progress forward. Would recommend this game if its on sale but if you're expectations simil…

Part run n gun, part platformer, but mostly frustrating. Game looks and sounds good, but the controls feel pretty terrible most of the time.

I have two versions of this game for some reason. I played this version a few years ago. I guess I should go try out the year one version to see what the difference is.
