Morningstar: Descent to Deadrock

It's pretty cool. It's your usual point&click game with inventory manipulation and it had a couple frustrating moments but overall it's well done. The main mystery was interesting. Some of the cutscenes were really impressive for a game of this scale.

[h2]Cleverly presented, slightly undercooked[/h2] Morningstar: Descent to Deadrock is a point-and-click adventure, but not the traditional sort where you spend half your life watching someone walk from the left side of the screen to the right, realise you forgot something, and send them back again. Instead, most locations are essentially still images - and I rather like that. It gives the game a slight hidden-object-game feel without actually becoming one. There are a few animations, but they don't get in the way. Even if the limited animation was originally a cost-saving decision, it was a [i]good[/i] cost-saving decision. One doesn't get to say that terribly often. The interface helps enormously. Sweeping the mouse across a scene activates a sort of scanner that highlights points of interest, neatly breaking up the usual hidden-object logic of staring suspiciously at every pixel until something admits to being interactive. The first-person perspective also allows Powell to comment on things through little conversations with himself, while the wounded captain serves as an in-world hint system who can point you in the right direction. The game was pretty alright! It felt like those side quests you would stumble upon in Mass Effect, except you are playing as the crew that has something strange terrible happen to them. I do have some complaints, like the piece needed for the ventilation was hard to find since I didn't notice it appearing and ran around trying to craft everything in my inventory. Then there was the voice acting, the voices themselves are fine but I think the interactions between powell and novak has room for improvement. I think the game is fine if you're getting it on sale like I did. It's short and sweet, cool atmosphere, and an interesting story. Although I hope that there might be a sequel or something to answer some questions or expand the story.

A really great reimagining of an early internet flash game. I remember playing a long time ago, and while it is as intriguing and entertaining as it was back in 2009, there are some things I wish they kept. For one, the original Voice actors are just much better. And two, while the music is enjoyable in this game, that old Morningstar background music really sets the atmosphere for this small point and click adventure. You are missing the sauce, even with the additional story and animations. Sorry to say.

I loved this game when it was free on Kongregate. So when I was watching a streamer and the beginning scene started I was like "hey this looks familiar" and immediately stopped the video so I could see if I could replay it. In short, nostalgia made me get it and I had just as much fun replaying it as when I first found the game years ago. I didn't encounter any bugs this time, but I do remember having a few when it was on kongregate, so just a heads up on that. also the voice acting is a little awkward but it just gives it more charm in my opinion.

It was nostalgic playing this again so many years after I played the flash version. It works great on Steam Deck. The inventory system can be annoying when combining objects sometimes.
