Mealmates is a more-art-than-game selection of minigames featuring charming, off the wall artwork. The artwork here is really good and a lot of work went into it. The same is harder to say for the minigames. The technical implementation here is lacking. I went into the options menu and wasn't able to escape. The games really feel like they could be done in Flash on the web, so they're lacking the complexity and depth one would expect from a true PC game. The asking price of $15 USD for some Adobe Flash tier minigames is somewhat extreme and unrealistic. It would be great to see the artist hired by a professional developer.

This game’s balancing system is that the winner is whoever “tastes the best” to some mysterious disembodied head by the end of the game - an extremely cryptic mechanic that as far as I can tell does not always have to do with who won the most rounds. The head might just not fw your flavor. Genius. Embrace chaos. Take the dweedpill.

Mealmates is an eccentric party game that takes the familiar idea of a minigame collection and surrounds it with creature care, cooking, exploration, customization, and deliberately surreal humor. Developed by magicdweedoo and published by magicdweedoo together with Nonsense Machine, it clearly favors personality and unpredictability over conventional structure. Its central concept is suitably strange: players raise their own unusual creature and ultimately compete to produce the most delicious specimen. That bizarre premise establishes the tone immediately and gives the various activities a common theme rather than making the experience feel like an unrelated collection of party challenges. At the heart of the game are 46 minigames that can be played alone or with friends. The considerable selection is important because short competitive activities depend heavily on variety to remain entertaining. Some of the appeal comes from discovering what absurd challenge will appear next rather than mastering a single complicated ruleset. Local multiplayer is particularly important, with shared and split-screen competitive and cooperative play supported alongside Remote Play Together. Solo …

Man, this game is wack. I bought it, started it up, got lost. Controls aren't even what I thought they would be. How do I quit the game? How do I stop and have lunch? I got what I paid for. Glad I got this game. Get it.
