✦ AI summary

Dark Quest is a short, simple dungeon crawler that successfully captures the feel of classic board games like HeroQuest, with turn-based tactical combat and straightforward exploration. Players appreciate its charming tabletop aesthetic and nostalgic appeal, though the game is quite brief and lacks story depth, with most finding it more worthwhile if they have familiarity with or fondness for old-school tabletop gaming. The Remastered update improved the experience by leaning further into its board game roots rather than mobile game mechanics.

6.8/10 I discovered these games the other night when I did a search for Heroquest on Steam. After reading the reviews I bought and played through Dark Quest 2 as it received decent reviews. I enjoyed that game and played it for 12 hours over the next 2 days. Since the original Dark Quest was also on sale for less than $5 I decided to try it. It is very rudimentary in it's execution, but it does an okay job of giving you that old heroquest feeling. It hasn't aged well, and is basically like playing the board game (with no rules or explanations given). But since I played the board games, I understand the vibes. For me this is an okay waste of 8 hours or so, but I don't think too many people will enjoy this if they were not original Heroquest players from back in the day. That being said, I am looking forward to trying Dark Quest 3 and 4 in the future.

Worthy of a mild recommendation after the recent remaster. I actually like this game better than Dark Quest 2 because there is no RNG. Both your heroes and the enemies are guaranteed to hit every time they attack, so good tactics like positioning, target selection, and efficient use of your abilities make a big difference. The game is also fairly easy to complete 100%.

Well crafted game that gives a good taste of old school dungeon crawlers

Dark Quest is a turn-based dungeon crawler that embraces the simplicity and imagination of classic tabletop fantasy adventures. Developed and published by Brain Seal Ltd, the game draws heavy inspiration from old-school board games and early tactical RPGs, creating an experience that feels less like a modern cinematic role-playing game and more like a digital recreation of a handcrafted tabletop campaign. Instead of focusing on complicated mechanics or massive open worlds, Dark Quest concentrates on tactical dungeon exploration, party management, and strategic combat wrapped inside a charming board game presentation. The first thing that immediately stands out is the game’s visual style. Every dungeon resembles a physical tabletop map populated with miniature figurines, traps, treasure chests, and monsters arranged as though they were part of a fantasy board game session. This presentation gives the game a unique personality that separates it from many other dungeon crawlers. The environments may not be technically impressive by modern standards, but the handcrafted aesthetic creates a nostalgic atmosphere that perfectly supports the game’s old-school design philosophy. The story…

Outstanding game bringing the atmosphere of the board game in a good implementation. Tested in a Legion GO (similar to Steam Deck) and worked well including the controls.
