About Kabaret

"The truth is this, every monster you have ever met, was once a human being."

Cursed into a monster, Jebat journeys into a realm called the "Alam Bunian". Taken in by the charismatic owner of Kabaret, known only as The Caretaker, Jebat is tasked with providing tea ceremonies to the dwellers in an effort to gather information on how to break his curse.

Kabaret is a dark fantasy folklore adventure game. The story unfolds through the eyes of Jebat, a cursed boy who is uprooted from his small town to a mystical, violent, and unforgiving monster realm. Astray and lonely in a place of unfathomable cruelty, Jebat confronts monsters both supernatural and human in the Kabaret.
Each of the mythical creatures who visit the Kabaret come from Southeast Asian folklores and legends. Listen to their unique stories, give advice through performing a tea ceremony, and find a way to break the curse.
  • Experience the story through the eyes of our main character, Jebat
  • Explore Kabaret by interacting with more than 20 different Southeast Asian-inspired mythical creatures
  • Pave your own way through the 6 different endings, each with its own unique route
  • Perform tea ceremonies and get to know the dwellers of Kabaret
  • Take on a match in Guli and Congkak, our Southeast Asian-inspired minigames
  • Manage a stage performance and help to put on a dazzling show
  • Featuring sounds of Hello Universe and Sambasunda Indonesia

Kabaret brings together mythical beings from Southeast Asian folklore in a mystical realm. This game is hand drawn stylised art and is complimented with traditional musical soundtrack. It is a dark fantasy folklore visual novel with traditional Southeast Asian games, tea brewing, musical gameplay and multiple endings.

Played this game, found the art style and setting quite compelling as a someone who is born and grew up in Southeast Asia myself. However the story had a weird vibe and does not compel me to return to the game after a few hours of play. Decided to leave a review though in recent light of allegations of sexual harassment from the studio. As someone who had worked in game dev myself, this is a shame. I personally cannot recommend this game to anyone, do not support dev studios who turn a blind eye to sexual harassment.

This is going to have to go thumbs down because the question is whether I could recommend this game and I wouldn't. That doesn't mean it wasn't a beautiful piece of art in may ways... Pros: + Gorgeous style. Loved the artwork of the characters. The interpretations of the minor monsters mentioned after reading what they were, very fun. + The atmosphere and music of the Kabaret itself is mysterious and intriguing and had nice areas. + And I do like a dark VN. I love the obvious danger to the scenario for the main character. If your decisions mattered more this would've been a great place for further consequences... maybe even routes to character death? Still, I liked the ones he faced. + Please more south asian folklore cause yes. I recognized a few creatures, met a few new ones I liked. + Loved this style of implementing Malaysian words. I've seen other small studios try and fail with this but the hover-text and dictionary was a clever way to do this. + Fun mini games. + While I had issues with events/saving, the pacing was steady and dialogue not too overwhelming. + Some very intriguing story scenarios informing the plot. Cons: + I need not mention what others have on manual sa…

can not recommend playing this game. aside from the artstyle this game provides little to nothing to keep me playing for more than a few hours. also do we really need to mention so many times about how handsome the MC is lol ? almost feels like a self insert from the dev oh and speaking of devs.... yea no, will no longer be supporting this studio

Very nice art style, music and theme songs. I also love the mythology behind it. But sadly the story is weak. It's ok to have a pre-set character in visual novels, but in Kabaret the main character is not quite likeable. Maybe the story try to deliver certain moral through the character, but I can hardly link to him. About the machanism, no manual save, no skip, no fast-forward..... What's the point for a visual novel to not have these functions. I feel like I was forced to watch a slow and bad writting film. Sadly the beautiful graphics and music can't counterbalance the flaws.

fantastic story and use of sea myth and folklore, also has very good and charming art, music, sfx, writing, characters, mechanics, atmosphere, paths, conversation choices, etc... there's much to like. doesn't have some qol that most vns have like fastforward/skip read text and multiple save slots that would have been nice to have. still very worth the price and minor annoyances. read it a while ago but very memorable. wish there were more oelvns and vns in general with this high quality.
