Grey Heritage: Faded Vision

Recommended just for being a decent sprg in a world that always needs more of those.

Saw the new one came out so thought I'd give this a try. Even on casual mode the game is very punishing, with enemies frequently 1 or 2 shotting characters and you're thrust into battle after battle with no sort of camp or formation screen to get an idea of what's what. Controls are a bit clunky. The fact that your weapons are "consumable" and break after so many uses, with not a lot of ways to get new ones, is a completely unnecessary frustration. (I have a healer with no heal and an archer with no bow, seems a bit pointless....). I did play as far as the mission where you access the shop, which has limited amounts of things and the game even warns you that income will be scarce. I mean, ok I get what its trying to do - but this hardly feels like casual mode with characters getting 2 shot and that's it, game over, load last save point, over and over again. I've seen the game over screen far too many times in a few hours of play to consider this "fun" and I'm not new to tactical games. This one's just a bit too brutal (and randomly so, critical hit = character dead). There's no way to farm money, weapons, or grind, so by the 3rd or so mission you're out of "consumable …

There seem to be a lot of people wishing this game was something it's not, and being disappointed as a result. If you don't like turn-based RPGs I would not recommend this game. If you take the game for what it is (an SRPG Maker game by a first time solo dev who is a fan of Fire Emblem 4), then there is plenty to enjoy here. From a grammar and use of the English language perspective, the writing is fine. I think English may be the developer's second language, but if so you can't tell just from the writing. There are mistakes here and there but nothing I wouldn't expect from any other solo dev. That being said, the actual story, dialogue, etc... It's bad. I could go into detail on why that's the case, but suffice to say if the plot is the most important thing to you, you're going to have a bad time. I'm more interested in the gameplay so it doesn't bother me too much, but it is definitely the weakest point. What this game does excel at is storytelling through gameplay. The levels and how they play out tell a better story than the stuff you read between chapters. I had a good time with this one. I really liked the effort they put into this and the scale of some of the battles were enjoyable. I pumped extra str into Peter and had a blast stealing weapons from all the enemies including Augustus' axe and gave it to my axe homie Gerald. It wasn't too difficult for me, but had some challenging moments.

A good game overall. The jailbreak chapter is probably my favorite to play. The game caught my eye due to similarities with Fire Emblem. However, I was a little disappointed with the lack of item variety. The amount of ally units you get across the gameplay mildly compensates for the lack of recruitment that you experience across the story line. Most disappointing of all was the lack of any time of class advancement system- something I was deeply looking forward too that started my interest in the genre. Still, it was a fun game. I hope to pick up the new title coming out 9/15/2025 and see if the devs have added anything new and exciting to the title.

Very enjoyable game that I've really been liking so far. The plot is fairly compelling, and there's subtle but fun character development and interactions between the cast. The combat system is fun too and offered me a challenge without being frustrating, even as someone who's not played many of the FE games. I'm really looking forward to following this developer and seeing how their games continue to evolve going forward, and I'm glad they've decided to explore the Grey Heritage verse more going forward and learning more about this world and the politics of it.
