About Zapper: One Wicked Cricket

ATARI PRESENTS is a series of titles geared toward the preservation of cult classics, forgotten favorites, and titles that would otherwise be lost to time. In the spirit of that, each ATARI PRESENTS title is presented unchanged from its original version other than providing the means to play them on modern hardware. Even the store description below is the very same language used to describe the title at the time of its release. Please enjoy!

Zapper is an action-packed and addictive game that starts with the “avoid-em-up” game play mechanics of Blitz Games’ own Frogger 2: Swampy’s Revenge, and then takes the action to a whole new level. In this action-adventure game, Zapper (a cricket) hops his way through six interactive worlds in a quest to find his brother, held captive by the evil magpie queen. Dangerous traps and even more dangerous enemies await Zapper. It will take fast-footed skill and timing to conquer all the worlds and survive the final showdown with the magpie queen.

GAME FEATURES:

- Classic “avoid-em-up” game play from the makers of Frogger 2: Swampy’s Revenge: Blitz Games.

- Unique enemies and traps to thwart Zapper on his quest.

- Intuitive control system with increasingly complex levels makes Zapper a pick-up-and-play treat for both novice and seasoned gamers.

this game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks. my mom would just buy us outdated slop gamecube games as a kid, and i have memories of receiving all of them except for this one. this one just appeared. it was as if it was a constant in space-time. we have zapper. we've always had zapper. such a bizarre, annoying, aggravating game. i love it more than life itself.

This is a game I used to own on the original Xbox so when I saw that cover here on Steam it just unleashed a lot of nostalgic memories for me, what's weird is I don't remember playing this title in particular, but once I started playing it, it reminded me of 'Frogger 2' on the PS1 which is something I did play a bit of again nostalgic, but once you learn this was supposed to be a sequel to that it makes sense. Blitz Games wanted to make a 'Frogger 3' to follow up on their previous 'Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge,' but was ultimately turned down by Konami so they could make their own games inhouse and instead of just abandoning the concept in general Blitz Games decided to make 'Zapper: One Wicket Cricket.' The game itself is very similar to Frogger 2 so if you've played that you'll be very comfortable and knowledgeable about how the game works. Zapper will hop is away across levels trying to collect all 6 eggs in a level to move on while collecting and freeing fireflies. The only real critique I have is how clunky the game can be at times. You have to manually rotate Zapper at times in order to even able to jump gaps. Otherwise I really like the "avoid em up" gameplay of Frogger, …

Zapper: One Wicked Cricket is a delightful return to a style of platforming that was once a staple of the early 2000s. Originally created by Blitz Games Ltd and brought back for modern audiences through the efforts of Big Boat Interactive, with publishing handled by Atari and Infogrames, the game preserves its classic identity instead of reinventing it. Rather than chasing contemporary trends, it celebrates its original design, offering players an adventure built around colorful environments, straightforward mechanics, and steadily increasing challenges. For anyone nostalgic for mascot platformers from the sixth console generation, this release captures that era remarkably well while remaining accessible on current hardware. The adventure follows Zapper, a spirited cricket determined to rescue his kidnapped brother from the clutches of the villainous Magpie Queen. The premise is intentionally simple, serving as a backdrop for an energetic journey through six imaginative worlds packed with environmental hazards, enemy encounters, and clever platforming sequences. While the story is lighthearted, it provides enough motivation to keep the adventure moving forward, allowing the gamepl…
