About Chroma Zero
Explore a mysterious, color-filled world where the environment itself is the puzzle and everything reacts dynamically to your actions as you uncover its secrets through experimentation and curiosity. This solo-developer metroidvania challenges your intuition with knowledge-based progression and no traditional levels, drawing inspiration from games like Outer Wilds and Antichamber to deliver a discovery-focused adventure you'll want to experience fresh.
Key Features
- Knowledge Based Progression – Learn the rules of the space, and you can progress farther in the world and deeper into the mystery
- Open-world Puzzles – Explore everywhere, the world itself is the puzzle. There are no levels.
- Extremely Dynamic Environment – The world reacts to your actions in dramatic fashion
- An enchanting and beautiful Original Score by Adam Kromelow and Dan Rufolo
- Narrative with charm and wit, and at times, wit and charm
Gameplay
Players generally take between 6 and 12 hours to finish the game, and a bit more to explore everything. Most progress is gated only by knowledge, which is gained by exploring and experimenting. This is an immersive, non-linear, risk-taking and moderately challenging "Metroidbrainia" game, made by a solo developer (hi there). The narrative is mostly light-hearted, but can be impactful at times. The puzzles ramp up in difficulty, though the game helps to guide you as well. So if you're exploring everywhere, you will know what to do -- maybe just not how to do it! I was inspired by games like Antichamber, Outer Wilds, Myst/Riven, and the discovery elements of Tunic. I hope to bring more games like these into the world, since by their nature they are focused on giving you a wonderful and surprising first-playthrough.Extras
- Controller Support – This game works 100% with controllers except for adjusting items in the 'Settings' subsection of the main/pause menu system. So, if you want to do stuff like change your resolution, adjust the sensitivity, adjust the key-bindings, turn on/off motion blur, etc. etc. it is ALL THERE for your fiddling pleasure, but you need a mouse to do it. Please forgive me this one trespass, dear gamer.
- Color Vision Deficiency Mode – An overlay can be positioned in any corner of the screen, or in the center, which describes the point-of-interest you're currently looking at.
- Photosensitivity Modes – A Brightness Offset adds range to the in-game brightness slider, and adds low-contrast animations to soften otherwise high-contrast events. An intro-animation offset adjusts the way the game starts, which typically involves a symmetrical pattern repeating across the screen. The offset makes it asymmetric.
- Speedrun Timer – A reposition-able timer starts on Play, and stops during dialogue sequences, but otherwise continues until game-over. Also, if this timer is enabled, the button-hold to delete your save file is sped up so fresh restarts can happen more quickly. Visit our discord for more speedrunning discussion and leaderboard links.

A real gem. The entire game is spent within these three giant colored rings, and you get three colors you can combine and/or apply on various objects. Your red thread will be trying to find this charming extradimensional ball of colored shards, and simply acquiring more information. The music is really good. The mechanics are very simple and yet used in all different and very satisfying ways. The puzzles are pretty hard, so you might get stumped at least once or twice (spent more than an hour on reminder 7) but they never feel cheap or illogical, there's a logical combination of actions you have to figure out, and sometimes all you really need is more information. If needed there's a very good hint guide, with hints going from reminders, vague direction, to the exact solution.2 found this helpful
(Time played does not reflect completion, as I played on another platform first) I had a delightful time with this colourful little puzzle box of a game. I would consider it one of the purest metroidbrainias in the genre. It was just the right level of challenge, with satisfying epiphanies and a great sense of reward after hours spent working out a solution (sometimes in my sleep) and then successfully executing it. While it is light on story, the game still has a lot of heart, and I got surprisingly attached to my little atemporal hint buddy. The music also brought chills on at least one occasion.2 found this helpful
The rush of figuring out this game's mechanics from a beautiful state of ignorance, through to becoming intimately familiar with every piece of this world, reminded me very much of Outer Wilds. In that it blends puzzle, exploration, and 'tinkering until you Figure It Out', the only thing this game lacks is graphical fidelity. If you're the type of gamer who can look past that to the mechanics and enjoy the beauty, there's something great here.1 found this helpful
Cool exploration puzzle game! Enjoyed it a lot, though I must say that get into magenta tower part was probably harder to figure out than literally anything else in the game
And it generally feels like making a leap "I can bend the rule "there is always one white solid portal, so I cant turn red one into white and end up there reliably" by breaking the white portal and leaving by dropdown" is the main culprit there. And I know that you can portal to solidified white without breaking, but this is guesswork -- if you try to solve it in your head and then execute, you either figure out that you can break everything on starting platform and then rotate from below or you rule out the solution and either find the unintended one or get stuck
Aside from that part it was quite interesting and fun. The only thing I could ask for this game is to be bigger without the quality compromise1 found this helpful
A truly fantastic Metroibrainia. If you have played Outerwilds and want another experience similar to that I HIGHLY recommend you play this game.1 found this helpful
Peak, as anything somewhat similar to outer wilds is by default. I beat the game without using the built in 3-hint system (which I didn't even realize existed until after I beat the game). No puzzle was overly simple, yet I never felt completely stuck. My only real complaint is that when using the core mechanic of the game, it creates white objects with a grid pattern, It reminded me of the default unity texture every time I saw it. could've been better to use more of the color they are supposed to represent instead of being universally white. It may seem like I wrote more about my one negative point rather than the positives, but I cannot say what I liked about it in fear of spoiling the game! JUST PLAY IT!1 found this helpful
