Crimson Rite

Very short but really fun dark fantasy survival horror. Plays really smoothly. Would like to see more.

This game is an excellent pick up & play Puzzle Horror/Survival Horror-ish game, especially for the low price. You play as the Adventurer in medias res, who comes across a deserted wreckage of a campsite, finding evidence of an attack & possible abduction. Soon after, the Adventurer is knocked out by an Orc, dragged to the Orc Fortress, & must navigate his way out while solving simple puzzles, finding journal entries, keys, & a few other collectibles. This game is incredibly tight, meaning if you properly explore each room to its fullest, by the time you get to the ending, you will have 100% Achievements & completion of the entire experience. Trust me when I say, that's definitely the way to go, it's honestly a bit difficult NOT to see everything this game has to offer. It may not be a huge game, but it is an excellent game, with great atmosphere, a compelling but short narrative, & a decently interesting twist. The best way to describe this game is like you're playing a snapshot of one night of some Adventurer's life. Looking like a forgotten PC-only dark fantasy game from the 90s, Crimson Rite uses tried and true fixed camera angles and tank controls to deliver a very short but very cool tale about exiled Orcs and kidnapped heroes. It's great to see such an unusual survival horror setting, playing as a warrior equipped with a sword and lantern in an Orcish lair. The game is very short, feeling a bit more like an introduction than a full fledged game. I would really love to see a full length title building on the established ideas here and I really do hope that the developer has plans to do something of the sort, because Crimson Rite has a really interesting thing going. I love the concept, setting, atmosphere and of course the classic survival horror gameplay, but I think the placement of interactables could use some work as they are extremely easy to miss and had me retracing my steps in confusion a couple of times despite the very short length of the game. I also would have liked a little more combat/threats throughout the game - as it stands there is minimal danger which limits the tension, it would have felt like a much fuller experience overall with just a handful more enemies scattered …

Brief, fun, a little dull but with an interesting outlook. Controls are fine. Combat is just facing your opponent and spamming 'attack'. Sound is fine, though music repetition can become annoying. Puzzles are fine - mostly it's a hunt for keys. Assets are basic, but do the job - animation is lacking some punch, though. Camera angles are mostly extremely conservative and a little boring, sadly. Credit where it's due, though, there's an attempt to add it a little character and history to these particular Orcs, which is nice. Is this worth €2.99? Yyyyyyyyeah, if you're really, really into fixed multicam games - but you can probably spend it more wisely elsewhere...!
