Background

Originally conceived while a student, Fail Fail Succeed grew from feelings of being stuck in a cycle of manic highs and depressive lows. The mechanics were designed as metaphors for those struggles: failure as an inevitable outcome, but traces of progress being left behind. In a bleak world of exhausting repetition, small comforts in the companionship of a loyal pup often became a guiding light.
Fail Fail Succeed is developed by a single developer. What began as a small weekend project, slowly grew after positive feedback, was further developed for Gotland Game Conference and Swedish Game Awards, and is now finally coming to Steam for everyone to play!

A fun puzzler that is challenging without being annoying. Fez got repetitive, Baba is You made me feel stupid, this one just lets me figure out how to get to me doggie without too much angst.

This is my second playthrough of this utterly charming puzzle game (I was lucky enough to get a review copy). The gorgeous minimalist pixel art and soothing soundtrack compliment the increasingly tricky puzzles perfectly; as does the main theme: being kind and forgiving to yourself, especially when you 'fail' (in this game, every failure leads to success). Oh, and you also get to choose your very own dog buddy! Lovely stuff!

Your world may be full of deadly lasers and spikes, and your brain may be going numb from managing the corpses of your past selves. The road to success may be rough, and you may fail over and over. But even the missteps take you forward: accept them as part of the process. Every time you get back up and try again, your resilience grows, and you learn something. Nurture that determination, and it will carry you. Because in the end, you can pet the dog. DOGS. ALL OF THEM YOU CAN PET ALL OF THE DOGS!!!

🔸 EXPECTATIONS: a puzzle platformer and nothing more. 🔸 REALITY: exactly what I expected, just a tad shorter than I thought. 🔷 Fail Fail Succeed is a puzzle platformer where you take advantage of your mistakes, and every failure only brings you closer to reaching your goal. 🔹 The plot premise is that your dog is running away (is she chasing something? Is she leading you somewhere?) so you need to reach the place where she is in every level. 🔹 Gameplay wise, you are bound to fail ('cause no one ever does everything right the 1st time) and in doing so two things happen: first, you leave a remain of your former self behind; and second, you respawn at the start. Now, what you left behind can be used as a platform (or other tool) to avoid what killed you previously or reach new places. 🔹 On top of that, each chapter introduces a new power up/ability that grants your remains special characteristics: clouds let you bounce higher, ice melts, sand crumbles on touch, etc. All those making for excellent puzzling situations, where you're constantly discovering new ways to use, and take advantage of, those properties. 🔹 The gentleness that the game transmits is also pr…

This was a short and sweet puzzle game that challenged me enough without overstaying its welcome. Not a huge fan of the art style, but I can't complain since it's a solo developer. The base mechanic of this game is dying on purpose in order to use your corpses to your advantage in your next life. It's fairly simple but not necessarily easy. I think the levels were well made, though there were a couple that I solved in ways that I'm not sure were intended, but I couldn't see an alternative method. My only complaint is the music gets repetitive way too quickly. You will want to use your own music after about an hour.

3/4: Cute little puzzle platformer where dying with an ability alters leaves something behind to help you solve puzzles. Neat concept, but (despite the cute dog) not really something I'd spend a ton of time with. It's just not the kind of gameplay that engages me. There's good polish though, including a a nice hint system and camera controls. Good ability variety, too!
