✦ AI summary

Players appreciate the game as a fun, straightforward shooter with great animated cutscenes and solid music that captures classic Western film aesthetics, though some feel the main campaign is short and the bonus missions are inconsistent in quality. The remaster successfully modernizes the visuals and presentation, though the core gameplay is fairly basic and the level design can occasionally be frustrating; most recommend waiting for a sale rather than paying full price.

Outlaws is, to my knowledge, the game that best emulates the feeling of a gunfight in a Western movie. Both you and the enemies die fast, especially on the higher difficulties. Bad difficulty was the sweet spot for me in terms of fun. Reloading feels tactical and deliberate, and you need to consider which weapon is best for each situation. The feeling of entering a room full of bad guys and quickly emptying your revolver into them is *chef’s kiss*. The level design leaves a lot to be desired. Levels frequently devolve into confusing key hunts that kill the otherwise perfect rhythm established by the combat. Important elements required for progression are sometimes poorly signposted, and in some missions the critical path involves something that would be considered a secret in another game. The sawmill, in particular, might be my least favorite level in any retro shooter. No game from 1997 should cost this much. The main campaign is also only around four hours long if you do not spend too much time lost, though there are additional missions outside it. Overall, it is a very good retro shooter, especially for people who like Westerns. I recommend it, but get it on sale if po…

Pretty impressive western FPS from the 90s. I thought the story was pretty good and the gameplay was fun as well, even though some of the puzzles were evil. Another banger remaster from the good folks over at Nightdive.

Remaster is fine but the game itself is just bad. Huge levels with needle in a haystack type of searching required to find that one enemy, door, or key needed to progress.

This game was never remastered, they updated the graphics to potatoe +, that's it. Don't bother trying to play through the game, youll never find your way out due to the map feature not working. The multiplayer community is a dead zone. Do not bother wasting your time trying to sort out the levels or steam will keep your money.

This took me right back to my childhood, when I first discovered the joy of playing this piece of art on the MSN gaming zone. The various clans, the camaraderie, the happiness when ping dropped under 300 on a 56k modem... Those were the days. This remaster is amazing and anyone who enjoyed the game back then should absolutely get it, just to relive the glory days of 2.5D first-person shooters with the gun in the centre of the screen! I'm getting my fiancee into it as well, so we can do some DM ML (those who know, know!). Note, if you're expecting a modern FPS, just move along. This is a classic and it plays like one. Just like you wouldn't expect modern QoL features from a classic car, nor would you judge one by modern standards, it makes no sense to judge this game by modern standards. This is a game for those of us who lived through that period and the younger ones who appreciate history. Signing off, former KAC_BillyKid

Outlaws is a pretty fun, if never quite amazing game. Most of the individual aspects of the game are very well executed, but somehow the overall experience is less than the sum of its parts. Nevertheless, for any classic FPS fan, this game is certainly worth a shot. PROS: - Great gunplay mechanics, even if the hit detection is not always consistent - Fantastic story and cutscenes, miles ahead of any other FPS game at that time - Fun setting and tone - Great soundtrack and audio design - Solid remaster that retains the original aesthetic CONS: - Absurd asking price, there is no reason for this to cost more than $10 - The level design, especially in the second half, is extremely repetitive - A few surprising performance issues, including crashing and some audio problems
