The Story

El Paso, a typical Wild West town in the southwestern United States near the Mexican border. It is the year 1881. For the last few months, the trains belonging to the famous railroad company, Twinnings & Co have been the target of a whole series of hold-ups and ambushes. The management of the company has decided enough is enough and they have to put an end to the raids. It has offered a reward of $15,000 for anyone who captures the leader of the gang responsible.

But no one in and around El Paso has the courage to take on the might of the bandidos, so the outlaws just keep on robbing train after train. Even the local Marshal is keeping well out of it.

It’s only when a stranger rides into town that things start to change. Bounty hunter John Cooper pays a visit to the local Twinnings & Co manager offering to end the railroad company’s problems once and for all. He gathers together a gang of his old partners and declares war on the bandidos. But during his pursuit, which will take him through half of the southwestern United States, Cooper soon discovers that on this mission nothing is quite what it seems...

This game shows it's age every time I look away from the screen then back at it. If you like Desperados, it's fun to go back and see where it comes from. Also, for a 25 year old game, it's not even that bad.

This is one of the best games ever made. Most people remember the Commandos saga, particularly the first and second games. But Desperados is not just Commandos in the far west, is the perfection of the genre. They took everything that was already incredible about Commandos and built a masterpiece on top. Desperados plays as the ultimate western game, you start only with one playable character, John Cooper who is wearing Indiana Jones clothes for some reason. Every couple of levels a new character is joined with a cohesive and logical motive behind. Each time you get a new character, you get a tutorial level to understand each of their very different skills. Main plot is that someone named El Diablo is commanding a gang that steals cash from trains and banks. There are lots of plot twists down the road and cool missions with unique mechanics. One of the best things is the OST, the game is fully musicalized, something that the original Commandos didn't do, with music reacting to what is going on. Calm, fitting music for the towns and deserts, tense songs where someone notices something weird. AI is also incredible advanced for the era. Enemies might sometimes notice that …

Good RTS which has a very similar feeling to Commandos. Even after all those years it's still entertaining

You know how sometimes you run into a game you never played back when it came out and you can see it has an interesting premise and interesting mechanics and, though you can deal with the fact that it looks and plays like a really old game because that's what it is, so much time has passed since its day in the sun that trying to play it today is a really rough experience due to needlessly clunky mechanics and design choices? Yeah, this is one of those for me. I tried to give it a chance and I was enjoying my time with it, but ti suddenly became a chore because of the controls and game mechanics. Good thing I got it on sale for like a buck a couple of years ago. Maybe the most recent sequels are a better choice. I have to give it a negative vote despite the fact that I don't doubt it was a great game when it came out.
