About FUR Squadron

About FUR Squadron

An arcade space shooter which follows the adventure of a team of elite pilots during what seems at first a routine training in virtual reality. In this mind-blowing journey through retrowave aesthetic environments and synthwave music you will shoot your way through the simulations (or not?) of the units and minions of the evil Skal Empire. FUR Squadron keeps the gameplay of classic 90's on-rails shooters alive, while bringing it up to date with even smoother controls and a refreshingly modern and sleek visual style.
  • An action and narrative-driven on-rails adventure with a classic 90’s shooter flair.
  • Smooth and quick gameplay through levels full of enemies and massive bosses. Unlock their secrets and power-up your star ship for maximum performance.
  • Six Levels. Three levels of difficulty piloting a variety of ships.
  • Original synthesizer soundtrack to match the retrowave aesthetics.
  • Steam Deck compatible.
  • A lovely axolotl!

A virtual world

The story of FUR Squadron is set in the middle of routine virtual reality training. However, an unknown threat bursts onto the scene and endangers the lives of the team. Could the dreaded Skal Empire be the one behind all of this? The fur_net system developed by Axel Mex shows low poly graphics rendered with a retrowave aesthetic. Of course, the whole adventure is accompanied by a synthwave soundtrack to match the graphics. Because work is best done in style.

Meet your squadron

  • Blaze Mustela is the leader of the FUR Squadron. He is brave and determined and is always focused on accomplishing the mission. When the going gets tough, he keeps his cool and helps his team get through the situation.
  • Kiro Nax had an accident that prevented him from flying with his own wings. Determined to take to the skies, he learned to pilot and has shown enormous talent at the controls. Now he is a valuable member of the squadron who likes to show off, even if that can get him into trouble.
  • Axel Mex was abandoned as a tadpole, but ended up being adopted by Blaze and recruited as a member of the FUR Squadron. Her curiosity led her to become an expert in technology. Within the squadron, she serves as their engineer and computer expert as well as a pilot. Always cheerful, she does not hesitate to face the bad guys in order to protect her new family.

And... Uh? Who's that?

Look I get "this game is best played with a controller". Sure. But not ALLOWING player to turn off the controller without literally physically unplugging it is inexcusable. Add a toggle in the options.

A good little Star Fox experience that takes place after their 2nd game, FUR Squadron Phoenix. It can be beaten pretty quickly but has some postgame challenges you can do if you want more playtime.

△ There is a scoring system × - Bland wireframe graphics. It feels like it's trying to have the 80's vibe which feels out of place in this game. I feel like they just wanted to save money by not giving this game good graphics. - Soulless storytelling and characters. The VA is just rabbling so you have to read the text while playing to even know what they are saying which takes away from the immersion and makes it unnecessarily harder to play - Gameplay is bland. No speed boost or backflips. You just slowly cruise through the level. - Music is just as bland as the graphics. It's just forgettable and boring. No interesting sound effects. Overall: This game might be okay for like $1. It's way too bland and soulless. Star Fox came out in 1993 with the remake in 1997 and are still way better than this game from 2023. This game is like taking Star Fox and removing many of the things that made it great and just watering it down.

This game is... conflicting. Clearly inspired by Star Fox, Fur Squadron is an on-rails space shooter. First off, the good. The game controls fine, and has multiple difficulties using each of the characters. The vector art style is neat and gives enough detail to still let you know where you are spatially. Story wise, its all vectors due to being a training program, which I can appreciate a story explanation for a game's design. The bosses are interesting and the levels mostly keep you engaged. Now for the bad. It's a short game, which isn't surprising. Most of these type of games are an hour or so at best. The problems come from how FS handles that short play time. There only 6 levels, with a theme of the training program getting messed with. The big issue I constantly faced was, there are no checkpoints throughout the game. You die, you go back to the start of the level. Sure, the levels are short, only being 4-5 minutes. However, most of your deaths will likely be on the boss fights, with you now having to replay 4-5 minutes of a level you already know how to play, just for another chance at the boss. It's old school, but not in a positive way. Even that wouldn't be so bad, ex…

This is just straight up Star Fox forget waiting on Nintendon't! This is a hour long campaign so bit short but gets what they setting up for a sequel. Now gameplay is straight to point I found no bugs or glitches very polished for a indie! Now story is simple straight forward and not going to lie I did get emotional at the end no spoilers thou!

Fun little bite-sized Star Fox 64. Despite it's extremely short runtime, it does have a few gameplay moments that are pretty unique to experience.
