With moments of almost guaranteed surprise damage in a game where death can rob you of the few useful upgrades you can find, it feels like many runs are an effort to find something to make your character decent while the bosses will almost always be a slog even if you find something powerful. All too similar enemies and level layouts don’t mix well with the mostly plain combat and platforming, the action not outright grueling when you’re weak but 99 Levels to Hell is still a game more about overcoming its rough edges with your better tools rather than chasing any sort of thrilling challenge.
99 Levels to Hell scratches that roguelike itch with its randomized loot and twin-stick platforming, and at $5 it's hard to complain too loudly. The metal soundtrack is genuinely great, and there's something addictive about diving back in to see what weapon combo you'll land — machine gun? bubble gun? ice rod? That said, the shine wears off faster than it should: levels are clearly recycled with texture swaps every 10 floors, enemies often blend frustratingly into the dark backgrounds, and the whole thing feels like a less-polished Spelunky clone that never quite escapes that shadow. If you're a die-hard roguelike fan and catch it on sale for under a dollar, it's worth a run or two — otherwise, just play Spelunky.
Wish hadn't decided to achievement hunt games but here we are. This game is simple and if you're looking for something mindless than go ahead and grab it but it gets old fast. Would have rather spent time/money on another game but one more achievement and this is getting retired in the library to never be touched again.
