9th Company Roots of Terror is an action-oriented real-time strategy game based on actual events that took place during the Soviet military campaign in Afghanistan.
9th Company follows the story of a ragged band of young recruits undergoing brutal training in Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley and culminates with a bloody stand against the Mujahideen warriors on a nameless mountain top in Afghanistan. It’s the Battle of Thermopylae all over again: one Russian fighter against 10 Afghanis!
9th Company recreates in detail the events that took place during the last large-scale Soviet military operation. Few know the history: the 9th Company of the 345th Guards Airborne Regiment came under heavy fire on “Hill 3234” on January 7th, 1988. They managed to stop several attacks by an estimated 400 Mujahideen and Pakistani mercenaries and held their position for two gory days. The company lost 6 men, and the remaining 28 of the total 39 were wounded. Two 9th Company soldiers were posthumously awarded the Golden Star medal and the title of Soviet Hero.

The campaign unfolds across a series of interconnected operations that allow players to select missions from an operational map before engaging in tactical combat. Once I got over the camera issues and slow start, this was one of the best RTS campaigns I ever played. Before each mission, the game lists all the men you've gotten killed so far in the campaign, with respective name, skills and medals. That small touch really changed my perspective on taking casualties throughout the story (plus there's a bonus mission for keeping certain soldiers alive until the end). Overall it's a simple but quite tactically rich game, the missions are diverse and well designed. I particularly enjoyed how vital scouting is when attacking or patrolling, as enemy ambushes and strong points will wipe out your whole platoon in seconds. Ammo management also provided some cinematic moments: in "last stands" your men end up having to share their last mags among themselves. A few times I had to send a guy crawling through hell to grab a few mags from enemy bodies and bring it back to share with everyone. Good stuff. So this is perhaps the only movie tie in game which is better than its movie. Deserves a remake.
This Game Has Ton Of Bugs I Even Could Not Finish Training Mission, The One That Comrade Captian Orderd To Clean Mines. The Waypoint It Just Stuck There. Plz Help! But Overall Good Game. I Love Its Mechanics And Everything But Bugs Ruin It.
