A Night at the Races

Interesting and unique idea for a platformer but the game just feels absolutely atrocious to play. The controls feel extremely jerky and awkward, the camera is way too zoomed in, and many of the mechanics are just plain annoying.

I wanted to like this game, but sadly it is a little too wonky for me. I played through roughly half the game, seeing as there are 12 worlds and I am on world 6 right now, but it just keeps annoying me more and more. The Pros: - The story inbetween isn't much, but I liked that little world and would have liked to know, why the stuff is going on, that is going on. I don't know if it explains it all at the end, but so far I was always happy for a little break to click on a new message. - The graphics are clear, you can clearly see the path you want to take and most of the time, how to approach it. - The controls are very responsive, feels pretty good to use.. however.. The Cons: - For me personally, it feels a little too fast to react to stuff you have not seen yet. There are all kinds of moments where you will die, because you'll need to remember how the level is built to properly maneuver through them. I know that the game has an assist mode, but I've played through all kinds of incredibly hard platformers in my life and never did I need to use some kind of assist mode. A Night at the Races is a fun game with an intriguing story. It's basically consisted of two intertwined games. One is an adventure game, the other is a platformer one. After playing a certain level of platformer levels, you continue the adventure (story) sequence. After the adventure sequence, the platformer game continues and so on. The adventure part has an gripping story, supported by great visuals. The developer of the game is really talented in story telling. The puzzles are quite easy, I considered the adventure part as interactable cutscenes, which didn't bother me at all. I kept wondering what would happen next in the story. The platformer game is extremely hard and unforgiving in default, while it's labeled as "Normal" mode. Fortunately, it's possible to change the difficulty of the game, which makes the game much more enjoyable for people who are not platformer experts. I started to enjoy the fun of the mechanics in the easy mode. In conclusion, this is a game with a gripping story, which might require you to choose the easy difficulty to enjoy the game unless you are a game expert.

I came into this game with the mistaken belief that I was somewhat good at platformers. 20 hours and 120 levels later I'm leaving with the knowledge that I'm trash, as well as a blister on my thumb and a deeply ingrained hatred for berries. Worth a look if you're into the super-hard platforming genre. Super tight camera and auto-run/jump controls means you don't have time to plan a route, it's pretty much all either reflexes and reaction or brute muscle memory. Pretty decent worldbuilding outside of the platforming segments, and the point and click portions provided a good pallet cleanser, but overall the story was sparse.

20 minutes in and I'm hooked. I came to see what others said about the game. Its quite addictive but I might have to change the difficulty to casual.

Fun and unique platformer with a cool story, kind of like geometry dash.
