I played Distraint and Distraint 2 before this and already really liked Jesse Makkonen’s style, so I was pretty excited for Afterdream. It has the same creepy, weird, emotional vibe I enjoy from his games. Short, atmospheric, and definitely worth playing if you’re into story-heavy indie horror.1 found this helpful
“Don’t judge a book by its cover” is what people usually say, but in this case, the cover is exactly what captured me. I previously played and enjoyed Distraint, and I can say that this game has a really nice style and visual design as well. The atmosphere and graphics are definitely strong points. The storyline, however, wasn’t the strongest part for me personally. It touches on some interesting themes, but unfortunately it didn’t resonate with me as much as I expected. Still, it might connect differently with other players.1 found this helpful
Afterdream feels like a spiritual successor to Distraint, one of the developer's previous series, with a new added mechanic of using an in-game camera to unlock certain things in the environment and help solve puzzles. Just like Distraint, the pixel art is charming, the sound design is minimalist but cool and the themes are very much similar too as it being about dealing loss. The psychological horror elements are also interesting although I'd say Distraint 2 was the peak in that regard. Now to the negatives, it has one of those kinds of endings that negates the whole game. SPOILERS! [spoiler]Sure, the game makes it clear early on that most of it is a dream, but then the one part that was supposed to be real turns out to be a dream at the end too.[/spoiler] Another negative is it having missable achievements which is aggravated by the game not having chapter selection after beating it to make it easier to go back and collect what was missed. The worse is that the most easily missable achievement is in the penultimate chapter making the player having to go through most of the game all over again just to get it. Fortunately the game isn't long so it isn't a big waste of time to do so…
