Alien Squatter

I know I'm late to the party, but as someone who has played this game for a couple years at this point (downloaded from itch) it is seriously one of my favorite games to play. As someone who loves aliens, dystopias, unique characters, and multiple ending games, it was right up my alley. I also love how the world has bright and cheery graphics, but then the characters are each going through their own layers of hell. Play this game for a fun and absurd time.

whatever value is here, it is ruined by a pretentious control scheme that requires only arrow keys and enter. even if this came out in 2019, you released a pc only game with NO WASD CONTROLS? are you an actual psychopath? besides this, the font, size, and general length and number of text boxes are way too much. i cant even read the first one because it stretches so poorly onto a modern screen, and the game expects me to read hundreds of them. the game legitimately needs some kind of epilepsy warning due to how poorly formatted the text boxes are, which has to be setting some kind of record. if you wanted to make a retro styled game, maybe you should have made it for a retro console as a romhack, or found a way to make it display properly on a modern screen (mine is 1080p, people with 1440p-4k screens are going to absolutely despise this game). maybe this would work just fine as some kind of SNES or GBA rom, but it is so aesthetically overwhelming unless i make the window absolutely tiny and so obtuse about it's input requirements that i don't find it playable on PC at all. please, if you are going to make a product like this, just consider that most users are going to dislike…

Alien Squatter is an Excellent light-rpg that distills mechanics into measured decisions on risk assessment without lacking in flavor text, character development, and what have you. Random encounters are scarce, but distilled into ethical 'do or don't' decisions between mugging coffee vapers or risking combat with psychic cockroaches for extra nutrients. There are implications of death, like maxing out your sick meter or running into the wrong guy, but your main resource is energy, which limits your number of steps per day. This is important to mention because of how flexibl3e this limit actually is. You can huff a drug named spam for more energy, or value collecting food for calories (which boost your next day's energy amount). You can also prioritize shortcuts, with some being cleverly laid out, or based on a chosen starting race. The atmosphere is great. The blurbs on collectibles: great. Almost everyone can be pursued as a relationship, but their endings can be stark, evocative, and not exactly happy. After about four hours of play, I got a bitter-sweet somewhat good ending.
