About Animal Gods
A beautifully illustrated, 2D top-down game with a focus on zen-like journeying, light puzzling, precision-platforming and fallen gods.
Story
The Animal Gods have fallen. Once sacred, they are now husks—haunted beasts lost to toxic fumes from a great bronze industry. Play as Thistle, a small & agile warrior hellbent on destroying the curse that plagues these creatures. Wield a 17th century BC Bronze Sword... and set the Gods free.

Key Features
- Cloak of Flame
Dash / warp through toxic-maze like rivers. Dashing moves Thistle a fixed distance over a fixed amount of time and upgrades to The Long Dash. - Map of The Unholy
Lets you choose dungeons in any order. Journey to the Gardens of Gwyn, the Halls of Eynd, and the Coast of Syn. Find the weapon and weapon upgrade in each dungeon to defeat the Animal Gods. - Light Puzzling
Puzzles rely on approximately 75% skill and 25% strategy. Each dungeon asks players to assess the obstacle ahead and approach cautiously. Puzzles are largely skill-based requiring a hint of strategy and luck. - Character Driven Story
Find notes left by occult-leader Jessuh, starry-eyed Juliette and Scientist Sven. Animal Gods' story balances the relationship between three key characters and their ties to the dark underbelly of the City of Sky Mirror. - Lives-09-Mode
09-Lives mode unlocks after successfully completing Animal Gods on "normal" and challenges you to complete dungeons with 09-lives or less.
Interesting visuals are not enough to make a good game. Most of time you stand next to enemies waiting to strike them as they move in predetermined pattern. One hit and you're back to checkpoint. After defeating some cubes move to next area. Gameplay is one of the most shallow I've ever seen. There's probably 3 zones with boss fights by the end and in each one you gather one ability like dash or weapon like bow. It's nothing like Zelda. Safe skip.
8 found this helpful
Gorgeous art, disappointing gameplay. The game play is a tedious and unrewarding slog with no heart. I was expecting a Zelda-like experience, as promised, but this is not Zelda or even Zelda-like except in the broadest possible interpretation; it might have worked better as a point-and-click puzzle adventure, or a JRPG, than a sort-of-maybe-kind-of "platformer". I truly wish the game had turned out better given I helped KickStart it. If you can steel yourself enough to put up with the game play, the art is indeed stunning, and the music is beautiful (if repetitive)--with these the developers met and exceeded expectations.8 found this helpful
Kickstarted this game, after reading the description "The game pairs the tight and polished action of The Legend of Zelda: A Link between Worlds with a cast of characters and touching story moments that might remind you of classic 90's JRPGS". The game doesn't even come close to reaching that goal. I played through one dungeon which had a tedious and boring mechanic and couldn't bring myself to play any more.4 found this helpful
What's worse than a bad game that is slow paced? A frustrating puzzle game that is bad and slow paced.2 found this helpful
OKAY, the only reason why I bought this game was because it was dirt cheap and I thought it looked pretty. I finished one dungeon and it was repetitive and boring. Not to mention that the soundtrack gets grating after a while, really really grating, I thought I was going insane as I died over and over again to the platforming. But I do have to say that the art is actually really really pretty. Though I don't like the PC's walk animation the visuals are decent enough1 found this helpful
I'm an original backer of this game, and I was a little disappointed by the little content the game delivered. I do not, by any means, regret backing this game, as I did it to help the devs make it, not because I was eager to play and thought it was going to be the best indie game ever. But the final product is...well...below expectations. It has a puzzling story told by diary entries, something that reminds me of Braid storytelling, with a bit pf poetry in it's writing. The art is beautiful and unique, which pleases the eyes of a 2D lover, and the soundtrack is very...unusual. A little to repetitive, but it's somewhat relaxing and different. The gameplay is solid, but a little bit frustrating. It was a design decision to offer 3 "dungeons" or 3 "trials" where you get your gameplay elements that are used only there and then taken from you. There's a sword in the snake animal god trial, a bow in the spider god one, and a dash in the lion god dungeon. Out of these trials you just walk and approach things to read them. The enemies are dull, executing only predetermined paths, with no reaction to the player. They're there acting more as moving trigger/switches that have to be destroy…1 found this helpful
