The drought this time came much stronger and changed daily life here in the backlands. Many plantations were lost, animals died and families abandoned their homes. It is in this scenario that Cícera lives, a curious young girl who uses the advice of her grandfather and other villagers to learn how to survive and strengthen herself to face the drought and realize her greatest dream: exploring the backlands to reunite with her parents.

What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Players praise ARIDA's unique historical setting in nineteenth-century Brazil and its meaningful storytelling about colonization, though opinions split sharply on gameplay. While some appreciate the challenge and narrative depth, others find the survival mechanics frustratingly opaque—complaining about unclear objectives, difficulty finding resources, and a steep learning curve even on easier difficulties. Technical issues including controller detection problems, graphics glitches, and inventory bugs on Steam Deck further detract from the experience for some players.
ARIDA: Backland's Awakening is a distinctive survival adventure that offers far more than the usual struggle against nature. Developed and published by Aoca Game Lab, the game invites players into the drought-stricken backlands of nineteenth-century Brazil, presenting a historical setting that is rarely explored in modern gaming. Instead of relying on fantasy, science fiction, or post-apocalyptic themes, it draws inspiration from real events and cultural traditions, delivering an experience that feels both immersive and meaningful. Its focus on authentic storytelling immediately gives it a unique identity among indie survival titles. The story follows a young girl named Cícera, whose determination to reunite with her family becomes the driving force behind her journey through the unforgiving sertão. As she crosses barren landscapes and isolated villages, players witness the hardships faced by people living through one of Brazil's most devastating droughts. The narrative unfolds naturally through conversations, environmental details, and encounters with fellow survivors, creating an emotional adventure that values human resilience over dramatic spectacle. Cícera is a relatable prot…3 found this helpful
Cute little game! I wish there had been more to it but I guess I'll have to wait for the sequel! The nordeste is ruthless and this game is just a tiny experience of it! A game that let you learn more about the world. I got to see a few pictures and videos of Arida 2 and the devs went from so far! They deserve applause and cheers! As well as encouragement to finish the story of Cicera.1 found this helpful
Jogo muito legal mas super curto. Encontrei alguns bugs.
Meh. Indei exploration with a hint of crafting survivor, but the bugs just killed it for me. It doesn't see my controller, and there's no option to check the keyboard controls in-game. When I put the graphics to high, everything went blue and empty.
I enjoyed the game. it is not easy providing a good challenge partly as some thing were not as obvious as i expected as it looks like your average cozy game. I am not sure if I want to do another run but there are other challenges to try for. get it on sale
I'm going to give this a thumbs up with a caveat. Even in the small world, I got lost a lot. And, playing on easy mode was still a pain in the ahh. I can't find water, I don't know where to go, and I'm up to 18 hours in a game that is supposed to be finished in less than three. I'm either an idiot, or this game is a pain in the ahh. anyway, if it weren't such a pain to play (I end up just dying, and restarting), I'd give it a positive. Fek, I hate "survival" games. Would have been good if not so brutal. May come back and give it a thumbs down when I manage to finish the bloody thing.
