Audio Factory

Audio Factory is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this "art experience". Instead of being a game, Audio Factory is a software application that presents a poorly made art exhibition. You'd think Google of all businesses would know better, but here they are polluting Steam with things that aren't games. Heck, if you google what a game is, it'll tell you. I guess these guys don't eat their own dog food. It's true that games can be art... art is where the pinnacles of craftsmanship and quality meet vision and narrative to create an experience far greater than the sum of the parts. This isn't a game at all, and the craftsmanship and narrative are terrible. This isn't making art better, it's just making gaming worse. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer anoth…

Audio Factory is the kind of game/tool that makes you feel like a genius audio engineer for about 45 seconds… right up until you touch one slider and your speakers start reciting curses in 2006 dubstep. It’s basically: **build a little sound pipeline → tweak knobs → become a menace to your own ears.** You’ll load in thinking, “I’ll make something chill.” Next thing you know you’ve created: * a bass that sounds like a fridge falling down stairs, * a snare that’s just two angry mosquitoes high-fiving, * and a “vocal” that is definitely your soul leaving your body. The “factory” part is accurate because once you get rolling, it becomes an assembly line: 1. Make a nice sound. 2. Get greedy. 3. Add one more effect “for flavor.” 4. Destroy everything. 5. Save anyway. (It’s art.) Also, nothing is funnier than confidently pressing play and realizing you’ve invented **the loudest possible silence** because something isn’t routed correctly. I got about 10 minutes out of this little experience and enjoyed it immensely. I did not have headphones plugged into my headset, but the sound was still immersive and engaging. I played this on a Quest 2 via Steam Link, and the default button mapping worked reasonably well. I did however encounter the technical issue of floating far above the ground, at least twice my actual height. I could still reach necessary buttons and interactive elements of the environment, because thankfully I didn't have to put my actual "hands" on them to make them work. Just point and press the trigger. I played this sitting, but it would have been easier to stand because there are several points at which you need to turn 90 to 180 degrees to reach things. There's not much reason to replay this, unless you just want to hear The Sounds all over again (which I find tempting, not gonna lie).
