About Audio Forager

Feel the magic of Machine Learning in this new experiment that combines over 44,000 sounds from Freesound, a data set created by Kyle McDonald and a touch of Cabbibo weirdness.

Run your hands through a cloud of sound, learn the shape of the computers mind, select your favorite audio delicacies and make a drum set from this decadent aural smorgasbord.

The mechanics may be simple ( navigate through a 3D map of sounds , select individual sounds to keep, and hit those sounds again to play them ), but because of absolutely massive size of the data set, the possibilities are endless!

Want to create your own piano out of synth notes? Go ahead!
How about a marimba of pops and crackles? Be my guest!

And if you are just the exploring type, the data is beautiful enough to begin with! There is no need to make an instrument, or play it, because in from of you lies a tool for discovering and understanding a beautiful algorithm, and even more beautiful data: Sound

This project would not be possible without the amazing community of FreeSound.org
As well as Kyle McDonald, who scraped audio from freesound.org & made t-SNE embeddings of the data!

Created during Unity Artist in Residency 2017

Audio Forager is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this software. Instead of being a game, Audio Forager is a software application that uses a bunch of sounds from Freesounds (hopefully every single one is credited or it's still effectively plagiarism) to allow you to make garbage noise and pretend it's music. I wonder why this was a complete and utter failure with only 9 users using it at the same time. Anyway, it's not a game. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer another block to position. Counter-Strike has a game loop where a player seeks another player, tests their skill against that player by shooting them or being shot, the computer rewards the player if they win, and then if the player survives, they repeat that loop. There's no loop here, no true i…

Played with Index. No instructions or tutorial, controls appear to activate at random and most sounds are accompanied by loud static in your ear. Not fun in any way.
