About Avernum: Escape From the Pit

✦ AI summary

Explore a massive underground empire full of dangerous monsters, magic, and political intrigue as a banished exile determined to survive or seek revenge against the surface world. With hundreds of quests, three distinct ending paths, and deep character customization across dozens of spells and abilities, Avernum delivers a sprawling old-school RPG adventure that lets you forge your own legend in the darkness below.

Avernum is an epic fantasy role-playing adventurer set in an enormous, subterranean nation. Avernum is a land underground, a subterranean nation full of rogues, misfits, and brigands, struggling for survival and wealth in the monster-infested darkness.

You have been banished to the underworld, never to see the light of day again.

The surface is ruled by the cruel Emperor Hawthorne, master of the Empire. All of the known lands are subject to his brutal command. Everyone who speaks out, misbehaves or doesn’t fit in is cast into the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, far below the surface. There, you are expected to die, a victim of starvation, horrible monsters, or simple despair.

But not all of the Avernites have surrendered. With magic and steel, they are forging a new nation deep underground. You can join them and fight for safety. Or freedom. Or, if you dare, revenge on the surface-worlders who tried to destroy you. Join your new countrymen, explore a huge game world, hunt for hundreds of magical artifacts, choose from hundreds of quests, and become the hero of the underworld!

Great game if it comes to exploration and setting, the world is pretty much open from the beginning, limited only by the power of our party. Main plot isn’t particularly engaging but there are numerous quality side quests. Party development is somehow limited, especially on higher difficulties, it seems we are forced to optimise a lot. On the other hand we have a lots od magical items (but balance is off, pole arms, bows are rather rare and thrown weapons are straight useless) My main complaint is pacing, I played it on hard and even though I could progress through certain locations at rather stable pace, there were often ENORMOUS difficulty spikes. Some were that serious that coming back few levels later was still not enough to beat it. Some of the skill descriptions are either confusing or incorrect, also it’s hard to predict hit chance/damage we might take against certain enemies. Some spells seem weak vs AI but are really strong vs player, like domination, when your melee warrior gets charmed (due to usually low mental resistance), he can literally one hit your other characters, on the other hand it takes him good few rounds to kill even weak enemies - due to high resistanc…

Avernum: Escape From the Pit is an outstanding revival of a classic computer role-playing game that demonstrates how timeless game design can remain engaging even years after its original release. Developed and published by Spiderweb Software, this remake transports players into the underground realm of Avernum, a massive subterranean nation populated by exiles who have been cast beneath the surface by a tyrannical empire. Rather than following the typical fantasy formula of noble heroes saving kingdoms, the game places players in a harsh environment where survival, exploration, and resistance against oppression become the driving forces behind an epic adventure. Its setting immediately stands out for its originality, creating a world that feels mysterious, dangerous, and filled with opportunities for discovery. The game's world is easily one of its strongest accomplishments. Avernum is an enormous interconnected landscape consisting of underground cities, isolated settlements, sprawling cave systems, ancient ruins, forgotten temples, monster-filled caverns, and countless hidden locations. Exploration is consistently rewarding because nearly every area contains meaningful quests, …

It's banana that a dev choose to totally give up balancing the game since it has to put in too much effort.

love this game for years! there is so much to do and see. the character editor is handy when you just want the story and not the RPG park. the graphics are old school, but I don't think the game world would work if they were any better... maybe Skyrim style would work... any how! great game!

It's alright. I played on casual and only went for one of the endings instead of all 3. I'm not good at these games and the storyline didn't excite me. The entire premise is you are looking for a way to escape, but that feels like more of an excuse to get the player to explore and do quests. This is the 4th spiderweb software game I have finished, with the previous 3 being the first 3 geneforge games. The writing in this is pretty good, but compared to the geneforge games, it feels a lot less creative.
