Just like it :)
Expansive RPG. Very rich world, lots of ways to build different characters. Combat is entertaining and challenging (though some few challenges rely on anti-fun mechanics). Interface lacks some quality of life features (characters will walk through fire without reason, spell and bow range is somewhat unclear especially around tunnels and corners) but these are all solvable by micro-managing your characters a bit more when relevant.
Avernum 4 is pretty boring! Started using cheats around halfway and was still not entertained. I mean the story and all is alright but the combat and exploration is almost repetitive after awhile. Don't stone me yet, the game is massive and there's plenty to do at every turn. And yet, something seems to be lacking, maybe have more classes/characters to choose from or add more abilities. The grind is subtle and somewhere along the line, i lost it and uninstalled the game. 5/10 DON'T RECOMMEND!
First time coming back to a turn-based RPG and this game provided such a welcoming experience. This is my review after covering maybe half of the map. - The grid combat style is not too difficult to handle even with challenging foes. Of course I have had to try again multiple times and figure out a working strategy for each boss, but it was expected. - The amount of exploration and looting has been great. I went back and forth between locations multiple times and still found things I missed, or to unlock new locations. - The world of Avernum 4 is vast with lots of stories to read through. I hope you like reading. - The ambience is great with attention to details, walking on different materials make different sounds, looting sounds. I have been dying to try and find a game with lots of looting and the sfx makes the game even more enjoyable.
This is the first Spiderweb game I feel has a (mostly) modern UI and Quality of life. The graphics and sounds also seem somewhat better, and whilst none of these will win any awards all three put together remove the barriers for entry. This means it is the perfect launch-pad for anyone interested in some of the best old school dungeon crawlers out there. Fun setting, fun story, and most importantly the mix of exploration , totally customisable builds / tactics and hand crafted encounters gives a brilliant game loop and deserves a huge thumbs up.
Awesome game, great storyline and multiple paths. Has a relatively open world design. Graphics are not great but gameplay is excellent. The game is very much like to old D&D games where you talk to people and grind through dungeon with a dungeon master. I have purchased and played every one of the games he (owner of Spiderweb Software) offer.
