What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Players deeply appreciate the Avernum series for its engaging, classic RPG experience and consistently solid world-building that keeps them invested across the franchise. However, common complaints center on the frustrating combat system with inconsistent hit chances and difficulty spikes, dated graphics, and puzzle design that often requires tedious backtracking without clear guidance on what needs to be done or where to return.
Sometimes, there's a game you play without ever losing interest, without never being bored. The Avernum series is that for me.2 found this helpful
Great old school RPG! There's difficult puzzles, secrets to uncover and an empire to crush! solid 50-60 hour game.
Avernum 2: Crystal Souls continues Spiderweb Software's tradition of delivering deep, content-rich role-playing games that place storytelling and player freedom above visual spectacle. Set in the sprawling underground world of Avernum, the game follows a kingdom facing one of its greatest crises as a mysterious and powerful enemy threatens its survival. Rather than relying on cinematic presentation or scripted action, the adventure emphasizes exploration, tactical decision-making, and meaningful character progression, resulting in an experience that feels rewarding for players who enjoy classic computer RPGs. Its old-school philosophy may not cater to everyone, but those willing to embrace its style will discover a remarkably ambitious fantasy adventure filled with depth and variety. The underground setting remains one of the game's greatest achievements. Avernum is an enormous realm packed with bustling settlements, abandoned ruins, hidden caverns, dangerous wilderness, and ancient strongholds waiting to be uncovered. Exploration is constantly encouraged, with every region offering unique stories, memorable characters, valuable treasures, and optional quests that expand the world…
I love Spiderweb games. Avernum and Geneforge never disappoint.
Love the series. Giving it a boost.
A lot of my hours were idle so it does not indicate how long it took. However, having finished, I give this game a grudging thumbs up. Overall, for a single developer, it deserves purchase and praise. Having written that, it is a grudging thumbs up for the following reasons: 1. The combat system is abysmal. You level up your character to 35 and you will still find with a 90% hit chance that you are missing but your enemies will go right through your resistances like butter. A boss will inexplicably increase damage until they delete you, invulnerability or not. 2. The graphics. 3. Many of the "puzzles" require you to figure out how to level up spells and then return someplace later, with no real notes on where. It makes a heck of a lot of progress hit-or-miss and boring. 4. Final critique is that some quests are bugged or do not make it clear how to progress. If you are a completionist, don't expect to complete everything. 5. Bonus: It annoys the snot out of me when I have a 4-person party that gets blocked easily and cannot be plotted for long distances of travel with no indication on how far away I can move the cursor. QoL issues.
