Aveyond 4: Shadow of the Mist

Finished Aveyond 4: Shadow of the Mist. A good RPG maker game in the style of the previous 3 games. This time focused on Boyle, a reluctant retired villain forced into saving the world (and his minion Fang). Little grinding required as long as you don’t avoid all enemies and the sidequests are ok-to-good. Includes both fairly simple quests and multipart quests that start near the beginning of the game and complete later; there are also some unmarked quests focused on the player noting NPC speech and remembering to fetch them certain items or go certain places. A bit too much backtracking with only moderate movement speeds and no player maps although the different zones / maps are simple enough that you don’t get lost.

Aveyond was right in the heart of the Indy RPG maker craze and Aveyond 4 continues a line of solid games. It's not really special or unique, but it does the usual things well. In Aveyond 4 the hero of your story is "Boyle The Horrible". Boyle is a retired villain living in a dark and spooky community for the former villains. But when his pet wolf is taken captive he embarks on a quest to save his faithful companion. The world may or may not be saved along the way. The story is well-enough told in cartoony way. I laughed and I've smiled and I've really enjoyed my time with the game. It isn't an emotional roller coaster, nor is it a literally classic. It's lighthearted, alot of the jokes landed for me, and theres just enough plot to keep me motivated. Mechanically, if you know RPG maker or classic JRPGs you know what to expect. So I'm not going to go deep into anything but just call out a few stand-out features good and bad. On the good side, every character is a completely unique playstyle. All the Aveyond games are the best!

I will say this game plays very differently from the others in the series. That being said it was still very enjoyable and I loved ho much play time there was. I didn't find the characters as lovable as previous games either but really liked the dialogue written between them. I also liked the revamped fighting style and new game play aspects that were included with this game. Overall I would definitely recommend this game.

Great plot and maps, nice to see the Aveyond stable is still being increased by quality titles.
