About Bacteria

✦ AI summary

Guide living cells according to Conway's Game of Life rules, placing new organisms to evolve the grid into a stable colored state or complete clearance. Master classic Life patterns like Gliders and Spaceships to solve increasingly challenging puzzles with limited placement areas.

'Bacteria' - A new puzzle game from the creators of 'Energy Balance' and 'Energy Cycle'.

This game is based on the rules of the cellular automaton ‘Life’ devised by John Horton Conway in 1970.
(You can read more about how it works in greater details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life )

In 'Bacteria' you have a square game field that is in some form of a stable state. You need to add in a certain number of cells so that, after a few steps, the field will be halted (in colored mode) or even cleared (in "hard" black & white mode). You could draw in single points, or use standard 'Life' patterns like "Gliders" (they move at an angle) and "Lightweight spaceships (LWSS)" (they move in a straight line).

Depending on the difficulty level, the player can use a smaller area to add new cells.

Bacteria, developed and published by Sometimes You, is a peculiar hybrid that sits somewhere between a puzzle game, a simulation, and an abstract experiment. It takes its foundation directly from Conway’s Game of Life—a system governed by simple rules that produce complex, often unpredictable behavior—and attempts to reshape that concept into something interactive. What emerges is a game that is intellectually interesting and occasionally mesmerizing, but also inconsistent in how effectively it translates its core idea into satisfying gameplay. At its heart, Bacteria revolves around a grid of cells that evolve over time based on a fixed set of rules. Cells live, die, or reproduce depending on the number of neighboring cells around them, creating patterns that shift and transform with each passing step. The player’s role is not to directly control the outcome, but to influence it by placing cells in specific positions. This indirect form of interaction defines the entire experience. Instead of solving problems in a linear or predictable way, you are essentially nudging a system and observing how it reacts. The game offers structured levels that attempt to turn this system into a p…

Watch cells multiply and divide. Do I understand this completely? No. Is it addicting for some strange reason? Yes. Is it worth 89 cents? Yes.
