About Barnacle

Investigate an abandoned multiplayer server frozen in time, where something clearly went wrong. What once felt familiar now feels empty, distorted, and watching. This atmospheric walking simulator focuses on exploration, tension, and discovery. There are no hand-holding objectives. Instead, you are left to navigate liminal, blocky environments inspired by early multiplayer worlds, slowly uncovering what happened here.Search for hidden items, uncover secrets, and piece together the story through environmental storytelling and scattered notes left behind. Every area holds fragments of the past, but not everything wants to be found. As you explore deeper, the world begins to shift. Spaces loop, change, and react to your presence. You are not alone. Dangerous entities roam the server, and avoiding them may be the only way to survive.Featuring a completely hand-crafted soundtrack by composer Nate Sassoon, with unique music created for every zone to capture the atmosphere, emotion, and identity of each area as you descend further into the server’s mystery. What happened to this place—and why does it feel like it’s still alive?

Not a bad game by any means, the game starts off strong with it's atmosphere and ambiguity of what's possible and can be fun for a few hours just exploring and getting spooked, but often times I felt lost and directionless and the game does not make obvious what you should be looking for, especially after you've gone through each door and feel like you've looked at everything there is to see, and you just sit at the door world wracking your brain thinking was there any place you may have forgotten to look. Some of the worlds are too on the nose with their inspirations like the backrooms or certain Roblox and Minecraft horror experiences and it doesn't help to keep you in the immersion that you feel at the beginning, and just ends up feeling derivative. For the sake of your sanity, if you come across a platforming area that feels really difficult, just ignore it until you happen upon an item that makes it easier. Because the way the game works, you'll be expected to do that platforming again later anyway if you want to get all of the map pieces. If you enjoy endlessly wandering for hours and listening to some tunes until you maybe happen to run into something story/progression re…

I spent a couple of hours simply wandering lost in Barnacle, I was ready to drop it and try again some other time but I finally began piecing together the puzzle and bit by bit I discovered more and more of the deep intricately designed maps. Having completed the main portion of the game I'm a huge fan of the way the game executes its story and I believe this Yume Nikki/Minecraft ARG horror inspired experience is something lots of players should enjoy.

[very important TL;DR at the end.] a really really pretty, interesting, and eerie walking sim that almost ruins itself with it's progression. certain parts, like all the levels in the chapel thread, are EXTREMELY frustrating to the point of wanting to just quit the game n never pick it back up. seriously, one wrong step and you've lost 30 minutes of parkouring across the most obnoxious sections. once you've fallen, not only will you have to do all the parkour you already did, but you'll also have to figure out how to get back to where the parkour even began. when you come across those parts ^ >>>>>LEAVE AND COME BACK LATER.<<<<< I REALLY WISH THE GAME TOLD YOU THIS, BUT THE REASON SOMETHING IS DIFFICULT IS BECAUSE YOU ARE MISSING A KEY ITEM THAT WILL MAKE IT INFINITELY EASIER. DO NOT TRY TO FORCE IT. IT'S MISERABLE. DOABLE, BUT MISERABLE. really wish the game told me i was wasting literal hours trying to overcome an obstacle when it was just going to give me an item later that would've made it 100x easier. also, for some reason, you'll finish a thread and gain a new item, and that item is literally only useful for the thread that you ALREADY COMPLETED IN ORDER TO GET THE ITEM.…
