An endless classic that feels superior to it's sequels for some reason.

Bought this on sale and then forgot about it for 3 weeks. Played it, and was basically a boring loop with "music syncing" being kind of uninteresting and distracting. If you want a bullet-hell style game, there are many far better options out there. UI and resolution is also a nightmare. The game likes to launch in a smaller window, and gets buggy on switching to full screen.

Decent, but not great. The main advantage is ofc playing with own music. I like the general idea too. There's a lot to do within 2 (or more with DLCs) modes. But there are bunch of flaws: - The gameplay is lacking. Without DLCs, you control just 1 ship in meh gameplay loop that spams you with very repetitive enemies. DLCs add more stuff, but eh. - Why exactly do you need to collect volume...? - The music folder is annoyingly not remembered sometimes. - The effect of the music is often lacking. Some songs don't even present the same enemy patterns for whatever reason. Overall - 5.5/10 - slightly positive. I recommend Beat Hazard 2 much more. It's way more entertaining with more enemies, tons of various ships, no volume nonsense and syncs better with the beat. 1 can be skipped, it beats it only in terms of achievement variety and boss balance.

From a pure gameplay standpoint, I'd have to say the first game is my favorite by far. All the random-gen nonsense in the world can't beat these original hand-crafted bosses. Highly recommended to get the DLC for this one as well if you're looking to get some extra longevity out of it.

Beat Hazard is an inventive arcade shooter developed and published by Cold Beam Games that takes a familiar genre and reinvents it through the power of music. Rather than treating songs as simple background entertainment, the game builds its entire gameplay structure around them. Every track in a player's music collection becomes a unique battlefield, with enemy patterns, weapon strength, visual intensity, and overall difficulty shaped by the rhythm and energy of the selected song. This concept gives the game an identity that remains distinctive even years after its original release. The gameplay revolves around piloting a spacecraft through waves of hostile enemies while collecting power-ups and chasing high scores. On the surface, the mechanics resemble a classic twin-stick shooter, but the music-reactive design transforms the experience into something much more dynamic. Loud sections of a song can dramatically increase the power of the player's weapons, allowing screens to be filled with devastating streams of fire. Quieter moments create breathing room before the action ramps up again. This constant interaction between audio and gameplay creates a feeling that the player is ac…
