Bite Size Terrors: Erobos Heaven

The vibes and atmosphere are absolutely incredible, top notch, especially at the start. The world, with masterful use of analog and digital effects like jpeg-style compression, slight over and under exposure enhance the realism of the setting without needing it to actually be fully realistic, which lead to genuinely the most tense I've been starting a videogame. I would recommend the game for this alone. However [SPOILERS AHEAD] Once the narrative actually starts going, it quickly lost its terrifying quality. Ultimately I think the ambiguity of not knowing was more terrifying than the knowledge of something being there. This ambiguity could have been expanded and exploited if the game focused more on the scene itself: The house is by itself the strongest part of the entire game. The narration, the monster design and the narrative itself were actually really, really well made and high quality and in another game they would've been the main selling point for sure, but in this context with so, so much potential, they ultimately made the experience a bit less than what it could be. I don't think I've ever been so scared in my entire life playing a horror game. I've never pressed alt+F4 in a game before when I got scared, I don't recommend doing that because there are no checkpoints so you have to start from the beginning every time. A very short game but it left its mark on me

If you play it in a mostly straightforward/story driven manner, it is a short well told and shot atmospheric horror. It feels like horror that happens to use the medium of a video game. I don't typically play story/horror games, so i tried to break the game at every point. this way of playing was a waste of time in the counting-blades-of-grass kind of way rather than the offhanded-do-nothing kind of way. just play the story and you won't miss anything The only annoyances are confusion when I miss dialogue (mostly my fault), and the achievements requiring 3 separate playthroughs of the story, which is already fairly linear and samey.

I'm normally bored playing horror games and don't have much interest. BUT. This was terrifying, unsettling and incredibly unique. Me and my girlfriend were both amazed by this little hidden gem and loved it. Can't wait for the next game :)
