Bonehold

It might be called Bonehold, but it’s fully fleshed out 😂 I’m not a big roguelike fan, but this game IS doing something special, because I had a hard time putting it down after I picked it up. Every run changed how I played and made me want to jump straight back in after dying. Which, honestly any good roguelike should be doing to you. Please keep in mind, that this is more of a 'first impressions' type of review, not a full complete breakdown of the game (as you can see from my playtime). THE GOOD - Random dungeons and constant weapons, spells, and armour make every run feel different. - The combat is simple to understand, but you still need to learn enemy attacks and adapt to whatever the RNG gods give you. - Death never feels pointless because your souls unlock permanent upgrades. - It worked properly, felt complete, and is priced VERY fairly. - The art style was giving oldschool Doom vibes, which I appreciated. THE NOT-SO-GOOD - It is single-player only. In my opinion, multiplayer and proximity chat would turn this from a good roguelike into an absolute banger. - The UI is very basic, and I wish unwanted loot could be sold instead of being left behind. Tried to like but couldnt, the progression is stale and boring stats upgrades that had to be buffed because they were not enough for the increased difficulties you unlock, every run feel like a slog because it has too many traps everywhere in the map so even just exploring requires not even a slow space but a more move few steps and stop, enemies are basic and buggy that like to hit through corners a lot, gear variety is just same 5 items painted over with plenty of generic buffs that go nowhere and plot is pretty much non-existent. If you just wanted a game to play some older style first person dungeon crawl, it does have the visuals but gameplay and exploration feels empty, the first run with any class is the same with any other. Bad pacing, boring gameplay and unrewarding exploring and grind honestly, played a couple of the extra game modes unlocked but they just werent fun enough

It's a good game but could deffenitely use some balancing patches and some more interesting mechanics to develop your character. As it is now, it's cool for what it is but I feel like my playtime is already stretching it.

As someone who mostly plays Retro FPS games (Boomer Shooters, old and new), this is the perfect game to get me acclimated to Dungeon Crawlers without totally alienating me with a super foreign set of controls. I love that I have to aim in freelook, and I love that movement isn't grid based. IDK if that's contentious in the DC community, but it's 100% why I was able to sink 10 hours into this game right away. Roguelite elements are all fine! Seems pretty par on that front. A little bit of a bummer that you always go through the same progression of bioms, but it makes sense textually, as you're climbing floors of a building, so you can't shuffle that I guess. Idk if I'm qualified to make a super literate critique, but I really like what I've played.

Its fun and the art is very charming. I've seen people say its not as good as other similar games but i haven't played any of those so idk. Good game

the inbred cousin of Nightmare Reaper and Mortal Sin just play those titles, they both offer infinitely better gameplay than this
