About Chesnakisnak

What if we saw a glimpse of a world alien to us, a dimension where we had conquered space yet never discovered the concept of the movable typing press?
Or what if we saw a world where Cathode-ray tube TV's exist alongside mobile phones and swing music? A world not unlike our own yet somewhat alien to us.
Chesnakisnak is a short choose-your-own adventure game which takes place in New Estuary city, in an anachronistic 1939.
You play as Artorious Manx, proprietor of Chesnakisnak, a bar/snack shop selling fried garlic bread to the people of New Estuary.
Artorious returns home every day to read his mail on his brand new Calculator. How he responds to this mail changes Artorious' story- will he miss paying his rent or perhaps find that the flames of lust have been lit between him and a childhood friend?
Relax and take in the sights or listen to DJ Laytnyt spin the best tunes on NEFM, all night long. Play various mini-games and explore your apartment building or read news articles on your Calculator. The night is young still.
New Estuary awaits.
You're never alone.

Chesnakisnak is a game that does not really know how it wants to deliver its gameplay and narrative. It is clear to me that the developer has good ideas and intentions with the core design, but ultimately fails to deliver the concept in an accessible, optimized manner. The UI is clunky at all levels, even the computer interface (which is primarily where the game wants you to focus) is just horrendous. Text is proportioned weird, and response/loading times for the game are all over the place. I encountered a game-breaking bug the first time I used the Calculator just by trying to exit out of it! Only redeeming quality of the game is the music selection. Everything else is clunky, slow, or overall incoherent. This game feels more like a developer's first time dealing with Unreal Engine, and plays like a proof of concept rather than a final product. To the dev: I like your ideas and concepts, but way more work needs to be put in for those to be successful. Presentation matters, including optimizing frame rates and bug fixes!

Chesnakisnak is strange case. Someone decided to set action in 1939, while it's all neons. Original, I guess. That visual part is okay. But gameplay is slow... and unclear, it says to read emails, I go everywhere around, pressing "E" whenever I can. Nothing. Maybe game glitched and doors did not open, I do not know. There is very little discussions (almost none) and no guide to check... except some Youtube let's plays. I checked - they directly could interact with computer... Ok, I try the same, but you cannot scroll text, when you open emails that do not completely get covered in 1080p screen? I can see more text on edge of screen... Indeed it looks like VN mixed with set of minigames. And it is often unclear whether something is bugged or is not supposed to work. What I disliked also is that sometimes exiting some screens resets your position to starting, while I still should be at PC. I know game is free, but there are better ways of spending your time. Please Dev, take it as a lesson - except visuals, gameplay elements are very important and those are the most complex parts of game dev.

Great concept, but the execution is more style than substance. The user interface of the game's central mechanic is horrendous. That may be intentional, but I just didn't want to interact with it after a while. The world building is fascinating, and honestly, that should have been the main focus. Besides the music it's the only interesting aspect of the game. This needed a bit more time in the oven, a few more playtesters and some bug fixes. Exiting out of the calculator for instance consistently crashes the game.
