About Chronicles of 2 Heroes: Amaterasu's Wrath

Chronicles of 2 Heroes is an intense 16-bit action platformer featuring Metroidvania elements, Japanese mythos and gorgeous pixel art. That's not all: you can switch between the protagonists in real time! Ayame and Kensei have unique, surprising combat styles that you will need to master to save feudal Japan from Amaterasu’s wrath.
 • Switch between the protagonists in real time. Kensei the samurai uses his katana for close combat, but he cannot jump. Ayame is way more agile and uses ranged attacks.
 • Overcome old-school platforming challenges. Retro platformers are our main reference, but we tried to bring the most satisfying, modern experience to the table.
 • Dive into Japanese mythos. Fight against ronin, yokai and countless enemies inspired by Japanese mythology.
 • Unlock up to 20 powerful abilities. From smashing the ground and stunning your enemies to double jumping and reaching higher platforms.

Amaterasu and her disciple, Empress Himiko, tyrannize feudal Japan with their mighty army of yokai. All hopes rest on Kensei the samurai and Ayame the kunoichi, two siblings who trained for years to defeat the goddess. Combining their abilities, they will get into the imperial capital of Osaka to steal the three sacred treasures, the empress’ source of power.

The character swapping in this game is annoying, unlike other metroidvania games like Astalon or Monster Boy and the cursed kingdom. Why? Because one character can jump and the other cannot, but it's worse than that. You use the same button for jump on one of them as you do for dashing on the other one. My brain keeps telling me to press it to jump when I'm the other guy. It's entirely manageable, but not a fun mental excersize to engage in and it makes playing the game unpleasant to me. It slows the gameplay down as you keep telling yourself 'oh no, wait, I can't do that, gotta press the character swap button'. It acts as a needlessly annoying interference. I don't see what purpose it serves to break up the age-old 'your character can run & jump & dash' into 2 separate beings. It just adds a layer of clunk to a basic QoL one is used too as a means of creating some challenge here and there. With that line of thinking, why don't we make it take 6 well-memorised button presses like its a Mortal Kombat combo in order to do something as basic as jump.

the italian isn't too complicated in this one, you have time to read everything. game developed by devs in italy, so the italian dialog is good. the game is a bit frustrating with the control system. you constantly need to swap between two characters, each with their own primary method of movement and attacking. the girl can double jump and throw kunai, but kunai are limited. the guy can't jump at all but can melee attack and dash through obstacles. you need to alternate between the two to maximize maneuverability. primarily, I'd say this game is a puzzle game. you have very little health, and because of the awkward control system, it's easy for you to get screwed over and get stuck taking hits. you will die a lot of dumb deaths in this, particularly against bosses. birds are the bane of your existence in this too. when you get used to the swapping mechanic, it feels good to do some cool maneuvers, and you'll find ways to circumvent challenges later in the game. you earn upgrades and new abilities that can absolutely break the game, and it has a new game plus. it's fun, but a bit rough around the edges, especially around the edges of the screen, where lots of buggy behavior ca…

Challenging, frustrating, and rewarding at the same time.

The game has no settings to remap controls.

Well done action platformer. Movements and controls are super responsive. The character switching mechanic reminded me a bit of the Trine series, although for this game precision and timing is much more important. This might not be for everyone, but I always enjoy the extra challenge of unorthodox controls. Art style looks great. Music is quite catchy, although it could get repetitive if you aren't used to 8-bit / 16-bit style of soundtrack. From the looks of it so far, it seems quite a long game.

It's fine but after playing The Messenger it's just not very impressive. The music is kind of annoying, not really doing what chip tune music is good at. However, the pixel art is very nice, especially the redone backgrounds. The plot is a bit strange, are the artefacts bad or is the empress bad? I feel like we could have just done with one or the other. But the big problem is that it just feels unwieldy. I get the switching mechanic but having to train your brain to think that you have to click an extra button before you jump or you dash doesn't feel good. I do give them credit for the easier mode by holding LB, that's a nice touch. It's not objectionable, it just didn't wow me and with so many games to choose from on Steam, it does really need to wow me to keep playing.
