Big variety of playstyles with truly different characters, tons of loving references to Success and Saizensen games (Psyvariar, Umihara Kawase, etc.), satisfying and irresistible scoring mechanics, a humongous amount of stages with a stage selection system keeping a brisk pace and length, charming art style, and a rich soundtrack full of awesome tunes. Incredible shmup that has so much to offer and enjoy. ---------------------- I can't say I particularly was a fan of Cotton as a series coming into this game. Cotton Boomerang, and 2 to a lesser extent, have some enjoyable enemy capture and throw mechanics, but most of the other games in the series felt more basic to me. Even though magic spells were there right from the get-go, I did not feel the compulsion to explore and really mess with those, at least within the framework of the games they are in. Sure, you can throw the Silk options, juggle crystals and set up handy magic spells, but most of the time the games still felt like you mostly just shoot the enemies until they die rather than explore a unique set of cool abilities in order to progress and score. As a result, the series wasn't all that much on my radar...that is, un…3 found this helpful
Good game But really does nothing that you couldn't find in other shmups Any character that isn't Cotton is a different flavor of broken I'd suggest to not bother with normal mode unless you haven't slept in 2 days are looking for something to put you to bed, I guess they didn't wanted anyone to feel bad by calling it "easy" mode3 found this helpful
Cotton makes a triumphant return to the gaming space with her first true sequel in ages. The gameplay is a lot faster and more frantic than the previous games, encouraging you to go ham with the crystal magic to increase your chain counter, and all the different playable characters add their own spin to the game mechanics, almost as if you got multiple games in one. You can also choose the order you play each stage, with more to unlock each time you clear the game! The graphics might look bad in screenshots, but they look much better in motion, it's impressive how they got such simplistic 3D character models but made them look really good. The only issue I have with the game is that none of the characters besides Cotton have any unique story cutscenes, which is a shame because I want to know what the heck is up with the Sanvein and Psyvariar characters, I want to know what happened to Appli after Cotton 2, and I want to know more about Umihara Kawase and that other girl Luffie (I wish I knew japanese so I could play the game she came from). It seems like each character has unique voice lines during gameplay, but they're in Japanese with no subs, so whatever they're talking abo…2 found this helpful
Horror games are great and fun, but sometimes we need variety so we don't get bored. One of my favorite genres other than horror is retro games, much like this one. This is a side scroller shooter about a witch who's an addict of willow candies. Her hunger for Willows makes her hot-headed, immature, and sometimes even violent if anyone stands between her and her favorite snack. Of course, in a cutely comedic way. :3 The Cotton series has been around for over 30 years, originally debuting in Japanese arcades in 1991 with Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams. It is widely recognized for helping establish the "cute 'em up" subgenre, featuring a broom-riding witch named Nata de Cotton instead of the standard spaceships found in other shooters. So, by the time I post this review, she is about 33 years old. How old are you now, gamers? Same as her, older, or younger? Doesn't matter. Even some grandpas and grandmas around the world are still gaming and mostly active as a gamer. We players never get old, but simply leveling up in the game of life. :3 This game is quite famous in Japan and lots of cameos participating as well in this one, they are: >Umihara Kawase: The protagonis…1 found this helpful
COTTOn Rock'n'Roll -SUPERLATIVE NIGHT DREAMS- is a colorful and confident revival of a classic “cute ’em up” lineage, developed by Studio Saizensen and published by SUCCESS Corp.. Created as a celebratory entry for the long-running Cotton franchise, the game blends nostalgic arcade sensibilities with modern mechanical refinements, presenting an experience that feels both reverent toward its roots and refreshingly contemporary. From its whimsical tone to its fast, responsive action, it is immediately clear that this is a title built with a deep understanding of classic shoot-’em-up design. At its foundation, the game remains a horizontally scrolling shooter where reflexes, positioning, and pattern recognition are paramount. Enemies flood the screen with dense yet readable bullet formations, demanding careful movement rather than sheer aggression. The pacing strikes a satisfying balance, alternating between moments of controlled pressure and explosive chaos that keep players constantly engaged. While the core mechanics are simple—movement, a standard shot, and a special attack—the way these elements interact with enemy design and stage layouts creates a gameplay loop that rewards bo…1 found this helpful
