Like many great indie horror titles, Crimson Ranch is dark, weird and unsettling. The simple RPG Maker presentation belies a well crafted narrative filled with strange iconography, bizarre rituals, nightmarish monstrosities and sinister arrangements between the forces of good and evil. The story follows the intertwining fates of several hapless characters, all set around the plantation house of Crimson Ranch. Likely set in late 19th century America, there are period specific narrative choices which some may find upsetting, but help to underpin the bleak and harsh reality of life at that time. Each character is either looking for, benefitting from, or trying to destroy a cursed book which may hold the power of resurrection. The game plays a little like a survival horror in that the map must slowly be unlocked through finding objects or solving puzzles, and there are enemy encounters which must be avoided. Crimson Ranch does have a lot of nice visuals and monstrous scenes created in a unique visual style and it was enjoyable seeing the horrifying moments. I found the story really confusing at first, as the game is shown through multiple different people’s perspectives to what is going on. With the quick changes and short story beats, I found that putting the story together became muddled. While as you get through the game it does become a lot clearer. I still can’t remember each character's early interactions that well. Overall Crimson Ranch was an Ok game, puzzles were interesting and did take a little thought. The problem was the story, the multiple quick changing character perspectives only confused me and dragged the game out, while at the end o…2 found this helpful
Frustrating game that makes zero sense. The art is cool.
If you like this kind of games you should buy it. I personally love 2D pixelart games so I didn't even bothered to refund after finishing the game.
