[u]Gurobu[/u] is a short (somewhere between 45 and 55 minutes) isometric horror-lite. Beyond a depressed color palette, this plot features a few animated cutscenes suggestive of FAITH’s (2004) own handmade transitions, which were rotoscoped over live footage that had been scaled to 192x160 resolution to mimic an Atari 2600. They appear smooth and nicely defined, along with others that havea more roughed 'sketch' property to them. Marx’s [u]Gurobu[/u] is well-written. It features a few seemingly disparate stories interwoven together by loneliness, past trauma, and a cat. The writing has depth for a 2D side-scroller, and the narrative touches on themes that are important to discuss, such as grief, betrayal, and depression. I appreciated how the plot treats Hugo's cat as an opportunity to overcome his own obstacles. By taking care of a pet, you can take care of yourself - in a way. That is an important message, I think. I've gushed about this dev's uniquely unsettling visual style and atmospheric storytelling before in my Crimson Ranch review, but WOW. Gurobu takes all of that, cranks it up to 100, and slips in a few hidden layers to boot. I pretty much love everything about this title. The creepy visuals, the disturbing sound effects, the engaging story, the mystery, and most of all; I love that they address the importance of mental health. Game runs fine, good framerate, didn't notice any bugs. Highly, highly recommending, especially for indie horror fans.

Weird. Rather silly than scary. But overall a good game. Although the spookiest thing about it would probably be the unsettling sound design, the game still has a nice art style, animations, and monster designs. As for the gameplay and story, both are dragging out a bit. The narrative is quite bland, slow and ends abruptly, with neither ending giving a conclusion to anything I was either hoping, asking, or caring for. Many, and mainly important, aspects of the story are unclear, left unanswered, and pretty much swept under the rug. And the gameplay just isn't very fun. The dream sequences are exciting because not only does the environment change, but stuff actually happens there. The only puzzle the game has is in a dream sequence. But alas, they're very short. The majority of the game is whenever you're awake, and the gameplay is mainly walking to the same places over and over where nothing really scary nor interesting is happening, with maybe one or two exceptions. The game really lacks puzzles or other fun and interesting mechanics. The music's not bad. This is definitely a hidden gem. I'm surprised I haven't heard about this game more, and finally sitting down to play it, I was honestly blown away. This RPGmaker game is dripping with unique style. From the unsettling blending of art scattered throughout, to the pixel look of the game that can be either cute or creepy depending on the context. Some of the visuals are haunting in a good way. This game also perfectly nailed the type of horror that works so well in these types of games. It uses suspense, anticipation, and good sound design to have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. I don't want to spoil the story, but I will say it's definitely more complex than it seems on the surface, all coming together to make a wonderful horror experience. Seriously, if you like creative RPGmaker horror games with compelling stories, [i]Gurobu[/i] is a great addition to your collection.
