Curse of Dragon Mountains: The Strix

Mildly recommended. This is a good example of an okay game that does most things right to an acceptable level, but doesn't do anything great. The graphics and presentation are not aging very well, but aren't bad. The story is a bit generic, yet I didn't mind it. The voice acting was passable with a couple interesting characters. I did like the mini-games and puzzles. For how short it is and how just okay it is, I'd get it on a deep discount, but you are not missing out if you skip.

Part of me says I should give it a thumbs up, it wasn't [i]awful[/i], after all. However, it wasn't exactly [i]great[/i], either. Unlike some, I don't have an issue with the voice acting. In fact, it was enjoyably rubbish which is something I can get behind in these kinds of games. No, my problem largely stems from how difficult it is to see or find things. Some locations you don't even know exist because without the little Exit Marker at the corner of the screen you simply can't tell there's anything there to interact with. Similarly are the items you need to locate on a given screen and some are just [i]so[/i] well blended in they don't even appear to be there. Some good examples are the black wolf statue near the broken carriage, and the charging machine by the fairy Amala. The former I still can't see and had to look up to know it's there, and the latter I was going all over looking for before I tried clicking on the exit reveal. Another was just.. not seeing the candles in the crypt you had to light up. Something else that stuck me as I was pondering why the game has two distinct names, [i]Tales from Dragon Mountain[/i] as it says when I play and [i]Curse of Dragon Mo…

It's a very wholesome experience. This game isn't trying to be a masterpiece. Its purpose is to provide a one-time experience. The poor writing and voice acting add an unexpected comedic charm to it. Although the game is very short, you will feel like you've been playing for hours. I also really like how the voice actor playing Mina doesn't seem to care. This could ruin the experience in other games, but in this one it really fits. Mina wants to go home, her voice actor wants to go home, and the player wants to finish the game quickly. My only issue was the inconsistent quality of the backgrounds. Sometimes they're very crisp and clear, and sometimes you see a bunch of pixels on your screen. 6/10. Better than expected.
