About Dawn of the Falkonir

Dawn of the Falkonir is an online cooperative action-adventure game with asymmetric combat and platforming that takes players through the mountains of Frostfall. Play as Aella, a spunky Falkonir, or Horu, the brave Falcon, as you work together to explore a mountain devastated by wild magic and plagued by nightmarish wraiths to put an end to the corruption. On the continent of Myrelin lies a village to the Northwest known as Frostfall. It is here the kingdom, Kingstone, trains the most elite scout units Myrelin has ever seen, the Falkonirs. It is the Falkonir's sworn duty to watch over the lands to protect the kingdom from any encroaching armies or outbursts of wild magic and monsters. On a day like any ordinary, Aella begins training with her falcon, Horu, and her mentor. When suddenly the ground trembles and shakes, and a thunderous crack pierces through the air revealing that Mount Bohlgast has unleashed its stored nightmares. Wraiths begin to manifest and envelop everything in their surroundings. With Aella barely saved by Horu's newfound strength, it is up to the two of them to end whatever wild magic is plaguing their people.

"Dawn of the Falkonir" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. As happens so often, "Dawn of the Falkonir" gives you that student project rollercoaster ride. Which is not as fun as it sounds. You see the game, see it has great graphics and an amazing premise, get all excited, then discover it's just a student tech demo homework assignment that isn't finished, isn't polished, and is so buggy it's unplayable. And will never get fixed because the students are gone. And tha…

Solid proof of concept, fun to play. Takes about 25 minutes to complete. I would love to see these mechanics polished and built out into a full game. It wants a little more in terms of interaction between the characters, but what's there is a solid start. Somewhat cheesable, but it feels fun to do so.
