About Dawn of the Mexica

Dawn of the Mexica is a challenging roguelike videogame based on the myths from the indigenous people of the Valley of Mexico in the age of the Culhua-Mexica Empire and the invasion of the spanish conquistadors.
Our story begins in a fateful morning, in which the sun god Huitzilopochtli hasn't risen...

- Pure turn-based roguelike with procedural level generation (different every game!) and character permadeath.
- Colored dynamic lighting. Light and shadows are essential in this sunless world.
- Extremely complex and realistic combat system. Every weapon and armor type combination is taken into account. There's more than a thousand detailed critical effects: Every part of your body can be injured or broken, burn and freeze. You can become blind. Or deaf. You may bleed, become stunned, knocked out...
- Complex character sheet with 9 stats, 12 Character classes, more than a hundred spells and more than 40 skills to choose from as you level up.
- Friendly and intuitive interface. You can fully enjoy the game either with mouse or keyboard.
- Weather/survival system. Even a torch may change temperature around you. Be careful not to freeze nor faint from the heat!
- Deeply researched. You won't find "ooparts". The mexica background is not "aesthetic". Weapons, armor, clothing and items from that era are recreated as faithfully as historical data allows.

I'm pretty tolerant when it comes to traditional roguelikes but this one needs more work on the basics. 1. On a high resolution monitor the character and map graphics are unplayably small. Just being able zoom in with the mouse would fix that. 2. Moving using the numeric keypad sometimes unintentionally moves several steps with a single press, possibly due to a too low repeat delay. Could be fixed using the mouse to move your character. 3. The mouse sometimes interferes with keyboard controls, yet at the same time needs more work to be playable using the mouse. For example, why can't I right click on objects to bring up a context menu? 4. There needs to be more detail and explanation throughout the game, especially character creation. Other roguelikes have huge integrated manuals, and the better ones do this with tooltips too.3 found this helpful
I have only started playing it, but it feels very well done and it's already clear that the author put a lot of work into making the setting authentic3 found this helpful
aside from the text being the size of grains of sand on my 4k monitor, its about the clunkiest modern roguelike ive played in a long time. yes, i get it, its old school... and i did love the old school roguelikes, like angband etc, and played the heck out of them, hundreds of hours of play... THIRTY YEARS AGO. however, in that span of time, we've seen it demonstrated that it is absolutely possible to make a traditional, old school roguelike AND have the modern ui and control conveniences that make them significantly less of a chore to play. and now, i find that i just... cant go back. dont want to go back. WONT go back. and so... this game has to go back. i just cant make myself play it.2 found this helpful
Challenging and beautiful, my only desire is for a pronunciation key; less than 300 MB installed
Hard AF, wonderful challenge level. Interesting story if you are skillful enough to actually get to play through it.
The game is excellent, is a well-made Rogue-like with interesting mechanics. The game mechanics work fairly good, is complex but not overwhelmed, the game definitely has more potential. It looks like the developer knows exactly what he was doing, and what a game "like-Rogue" is. Unfortunately, the game needs more development and balance (overall maturity). Although the mouse is supported, I play only with the keyboard, same for all the Rogue-like games, Dawn of Mexica is not an exception. To me, key controls are intuitive and easy. To unlock new classes is fairly easy, just play and experiment with different items, skills and new classes. Like-Rogue games, aka Rogue-like, are strategy/exploration games, you need planning/thinking, and you need to be tactical during the combat. Tip 1: Do the tutorial and read all the messages during the tutorial (Duh!). Before buying the game, I watched a moron on YouTube losing like 10 or more times in the tutorial, they guy didn't have a clue how to play.
